Surgery in January 2012

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I got approval a week ago and I am so excited! I have to close cousins who've had gastric bypass so I do have their support and knowledge. However, since I'm getting the sleeve, I thought it imperative to join a site that would be tailored to my needs....so here I am!

I've been scheduled for January 23 and I've been in research mode. Prior to reading around, I thought I would stock up on all these powders and shakes. I've since learned that that would be a bad idea. So I'm going to get a few samples and see what I like.

I know that I will have to consume about 60 grams of Protein a day (yikes!). But I'm up to the challenge. I do have a consistency problems in that I don't like anything too thick or viscous, so I'm going to make my shakes with Water and drink them very cold! Also, my list of supplements are: a Multi-Vitamin, Iron, Biotin, B12, Calcium and a B50 complex. Does anyone have anything to add? Or the names of any good ones? And where to buy at a good price?

Also, how much water should one drink a day? Also, how about Protein powder? Has anyone tried Unjury? Is it any good? I was thinking about getting a sample but some reviewers said the smell was awful. I think that's about it (for now)...

Congrat Dania! You'll probably be so busy with the holidays, January 2012 will sneak up on you and be here before you know it. I prefer the EAS Advantedge (ready to drink) shakes...but there's a section on here dedicated to only Protein drinks. You should check it out.

Regarding how much Water to drink, I'll share my experience. Before my surgery (Oct 31), I was doing my best to drink at least a gallon of Water a day. Sometimes I fell a little short but my point is, my surgery went off without a hitch and I recovered really fast. I have to believe that staying that hydrated for so long before surgery has to have had at least some influence on my fast recovery. I'm not a doc so use that experience however you see fit.

Regardless, just keep reading on here and asking any question. This site helped me big time in getting educated and prepped prior to my surgery. Best of luck with your adventure! It's been a blast for me so far.

I'm going to do three liters a day. That's two fillings of my Poland Spring bottle. And I'm also doing exercise because that's supposed to help prior to the surgery to help the healing process. I'm starting slow...LOL! I'm really out of shape. I'm doing yoga at night. I have two jobs so when I get time off, I'll be walking!

Hi, I just switched my date from Nov. 28 to Jan. 16. Doc. says you need to rest for about 4 weeks to heal, there is no way I will rest in Dec. (who does?). Is there a January sleevers group yet?

ME TOO! I'm hoping to have mine done about that same week of jan. or maybe the week after. I just got approved last week also. I'm only 5' so I need to lose abut 75. I'm so exicted and thankful that my health insurace started covering this now!

I have started eating more Protein, drinking the whey shakes a few times per week and eating MUCH slower and cutting my food into real small pieces... and my big thing was not drinking when I eat bc I usually drink ALOT but it hasn't been that hard not to do it suprisingly. I just started my 10 week online program that is required and I go tomorrow to weigh in for the last time I think. It's a process and alearning process I'm sure ...but I'm really happy to have the chance to do it!

Me too!! I've been researching and reading stuff. Sometimes reading too much can be a hindrance because some info contradicts other info. So right now, I'm getting my supplements and Vitamins in order. Once I get those purchased, then I'm going to start looking for Protein Shakes (in small volumes, of course). I'm just looking to Water them down as much as possible so they're not too thick. That way I can trick myself into thinking that I'm drinking milk. Anything that's too thick is likely to make me gag.

Thick doesn't bother me, I like it! and I have been eating the heck out of chiobani champions honey-nana greek yougurt and the Okinos honey or vanilla...DEF not the plain it wasn't good...maybe used in food instead of sour cream but not alone! I've only tried the Jillian Michael whey chocolate powder but whatever you do DONT put it in hot coco...it just clumps! LOL

Now that I know I'm approved I am gonna invest in some of the better whey powders like Isopure or bariatric atvantage and try those out. The world according to eggface blog has tons of recipes for "bites" meals and this site is awesome for info!

Hello @JaSleeve: I just got approved. However, I have to leave the country in December and I'm not getting back til January 7th. I'll start the fast on the 8th and get operated two weeks from that. I'm going to the Dominican Republic so I didn't really want to be there post-op. My diet choices would be seriously limited. And my little grandmother would be try to force-feed me!

Hi all! I am scheduled for January 12. Start pre-op diet January 5. I'm so excited and also a bit nervous. I met with the dietician today and also had the required TNE pre-op procedure to assess for any existing hernia that may need correction during surgery or gastric bacteria (h pylori) requiring antibiotic treatment pre-surgery. TNE was not a pleasant experience but not horrible...Glad it's over!

I will post the list of Protein supplement suggestions and Vitamins from the dietician in case they are helpful Dania621.

So, for the period of time before pre op diet starts any thoughts on taking one Vitamin that covers the daily recommendations vs taking so many separate Vitamins? I got the ok (when I asked) to just take a prenatal Vitamin. I was told I could take Biotin since I expressed concern over potential hair loss.

Yay January sleevers! I am so excited for us!

I'm very excited too! Please display any info your dietitian discusses. I already got a multi, Biotin and B12 from Amazon. The prices were okay. But let me just say I can't wait to be able to swallow whole pills. They'll be a little cheaper than the chewables!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
