ongoing weight loss after 24 months?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on march 2010.My weight was 355 pounds for 5'11''.And my age was 67.Have always been an athlete:hockey,football,baseball...This summer I rode my bike from 15 to 20 miles about 5 days a week.

My health is great and since the sleeve my diabetes is much improved, same with my hypertension and cholesterol.

The problem is my weight.Today it's 295 pounds. After 12 months it was still 315.So last six months I lost around 20 pounds. But in a perfect world I would like to be at 220 or better.

One of the reason for that disapointing result is that I followed my nut recommendations for carbs. It says that it should be around 160 a day in the Canadian food Guide. She works in the big hospital where I had my surgery.I know now that many surgeons recommend to be under 50 grams if we still have to lose weight.

Also from a scan my surgeon said that my stomach did not expand much and is still very effective.

I enjoy good food but I dont have any problem restricting myself.

I would appreciate to receive comments and observations from vets members and those who had a similar situation because my surgeon is now offering me the second step, the DS.He says that it would clear all my comorbidities(or nearly). But it is a serious matter the rerouting of the small intestine.

If I would be sure to lose my excess weight by restricting more my diet and increasing my training I would stick with the sleeve but my proposed operating date is close and I have to make a decision.

Thank you for reading and regards.

This is just me....but if I ate that many carbs I would not loose weight either. Before you go and let them do that other surgery.....try eliminating the carbs and see what happens. Are you getting 80 grams of Protein in a day? I am just asking because I know if I fill up on the carbs (rice, bread, pasta) there is no way I get the Protein in. The protein is what keeps you feeling full longer (or for me anyway). A day's menu for me goes something like this:

Breakfast 2 poached eggs

snack String cheese

lunch Baked chicken breast and green Beans

Snack Nutts (pecans walnuts peanuts and NOT the honey coated kind :)

dinner Baked fish and some kind of veggie (i avoid corn and carrots) like field peas, green peas

Late night - if I have not gotten enough protein in I add a Protein Bar or powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken broth (20 grams protein)

So far the weight is coming off 3-4 lbs a week for me. Just thought you might want some diet to compare to.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

I am allowed 30 per meal which if I follow the rules with Protein first I never hit it, and 15 for snack. 160 seems like an awful lot of carbs. I've been consistantly losing about 3 lbs per week.

That's over 5 times per day of the carbs I consumed during my losing stage. If you're willing to live the DS lifestyle, the 20-30 vitamins/minerals per day with the DS, then you can move forward, but I wouldn't do it without doing low carb, higher Protein and seeing if your co-morbidities resolve.

Also, with the DS being done in the 2nd stage, it's shown to not be as effective with weight loss and co-morbidity resolution.

If you haven't already, I'd recommend strolling over to the DS forum on obesityhelp.com and check out dsfacts.com for more information.

You'll have to cut carbs significantly if you go DS because even the DS doesn't beat carbs, and then there are the unpleasant side effects if you eat carbs with DS.

Research this surgery before you make a decision. That is a really big decision and you need to know what your life will be like after this surgery.

Are you able to exercise? Are you actually eating the 160 carbs that this nut recommended? Try stepping up the exercise and dropping the carbs to the recommended 50 grams per day and I am sure you will see a difference.

I agree with the other posts... before you under go any more surgery, try the tips suggested. If you still have good restriction, then I think you could get near your goal with the sleeve.

Track your food for a couple of 'normal days' first; cals, carbs Protein and fluids. This will give you a base line to work from. You can then make an educated adjustment to your intake and see what happens.

Good luck... let us know what you decide

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
