Do the Staples scar over?

Recommended Posts

I will have my surgery in 9 days. As I review all my last minute questions, one came up about the staples and the closure. I will ask my doctor but do not see him for another 8 days. Once the large lobe of the stomach is removed, sealed with the staple line - does that line develop scaring over it and or is there a chance the staples can impact other organs (sharp)? I have been on liquid diet for 8 days with the purpose of shrinking my liver, making it easier for the doctor and to avoid cracks or injury during the procedure. So, once the staples are there, can they impact the liver?

I know Tiffikins is close to delivery (congratulations to her and her family by the way) and has shared much with all of us. I don't recall anyone else sharing during pregnancy; just curious if anyone has seen their stomach after a couple months/years to know if you can see the staples any longer?

Thanks All - it still is all so very exciting.

Sandy

I have the same question....

I worked for general surgeons for several years (the same specialty that performs the sleeve) and none had ever seen or heard of a titanium clip ("internal staples") migrating and causing a problem. I suppose theoretically it is possible, but the chances are extremely low, probably barely over zero.

I unfortunately had to have my gallbladder removed last thursday at almost 3 months out. My surgeon said everything looked great. No exposed staples. He does sew the stomach over the staples though so that probably makes a difference. The staples that are there do not have sharp points to hurt other organs... But scar tissue can form between them and other organs.

My doc put a layer of fat over my staple line.

They should put a glue like substance over the staple line. This particular type of surgery is not that old and no long term studies from what I hear. Like a lap band you are talking a foreign object in the body but instead of guessing I would ask the doctor who hopefully knows.

My surgeon explained it to me. He said the staples stay in place by our stomachs basically growing and adhering to them, forming a sealed edge. Our body heals around them and seals it shut.

My Dr had a little sponge stomach in his office with half of the lobe stapled with real staples. These are not the type of staples you use in the office. They are smooth, tiny and tight. They are not going to scratch or interfere with any other organs.

So they are actually real staples, at least that's what it sounds like. They aren't those dissolving ones.? I know with my C-section I had my stomach stapled but they all dissolved, I assumed it would work the same way but I guess not lol.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
