3 weeks out & my mind is STILL playing tricks on me

Recommended Posts

My mind is playing mean tricks on me! For some reason, I can't seem to get enough Water in & my mind makes me think that my throat has gotten smaller. I also still make my food plates the same size they used to be & I waste lots of food. AND I never know when I'm full or satisfied. I stop eating when I feel like the food may come up. I'm at a loss. My will power keeps me on track, but this mind of mine doesn't seem to want to catch up to the changes. Will this ever change?

Your throat feels smaller because you are drinking or eating to fast. It's backing up. Hope you are on soft food not regular food. That's not for a month out at least. Measure your food. Your mind thinks you can still eat large portions. I went through it too. It's normal. Read how you are suppose to eat. Write down & measure your food. Eat & drink slow. Plus don't pay attention to your mind. When you are full stop.

Your stomach is maybe 2 oz right now. I used a empty 3oz baby food plastic container to measure my food.

Good luck

A couple of tricks that I have used in the past (I have not been sleeved yet, but they may still be applicable):

-Devise a plan, get a hold of good eating guidelines and know your targets (what you should be eating, portion size, frequency etc)

-Use a smaller plate/cup. Even now, I often server meals off a side dish plate rather then a big dinner plate

-Plan and pre-portion food - measure it, weigh it or whatever, but since you are still learning trust the food scale and not your eyes

-Stop eating when you are done with your pre-portioned amount, or you feel satisfied, whichever comes first. You may still be learning when you are really satisfied, so leaning on your plan /guidelines can be very helpful

-I personally do best eating small amounts every 2-3 hours so I don't get hungry, but the small amounts need to be Protein first and follow the healthy guidellines (ie chips don't cut it). If I get over hungry, I overeat - plain and simple

You can do this! Think of way to trick your mind back! I have been using smaller plates and using toddler utensils. It has been very helpful! I also always start with Protein, sometimes if I am super hungry I only put protein on my plate to make sure that is first and foremost! Also, check the labels! I have learned that if you get too much sodium it's not good for you and even protein packed foods don't always mean it's ok to eat by bariatric standards! Keep your head up! You will do just fine!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
