Timing of your surgery

Recommended Posts

Love your will power. I hope I can do the same. I have surgery Dec 5th and will be in my 3rd wk by Christmas. I will be on the liquid pre op diet (lots of Protein shakes ) during Thanksgiving but i have the same philosophy as you. Make it thru the holidays and be that much closer to being in a new body this summer ;)

I'm here for moral support,.......may need you guys for the same !!!

Haven't we all enjoyed enough holidays and the foods/festivities that revolve around them. Isn't that what got us into this boat in the first place, making something revolve around food instead of other things. Sounds harsh but it is true. Maybe your focus is not the food part but actually instead the family part. You should be feeling well enough to be around your family, you just wont be eating what they're eating in the quantity that they are eating it. Which you will have to get used to eventually anyways.

My surgeon estimated I should be having surgery sometime between Mid-November and Mid-December, I wouldn't trade it for the world. It is the ultimate test, because if I can get thru the holidays with mine and my BF's family (who revolve everything around food) then I can get thru anything. Plus as an added bonus like you said, skinnier for the summer.

That is so worth it to me. Giving up one Thanksgiving and one Christmas to be thinner and healthier for the next summer and the holidays that follow has no contest to not having the surgery this year just to eat holiday foods and hang out with my family. I will still be hanging out with my family but I will be eating chicken broth and relaxing a lot more. They will be eating Turkey, sledding, and building snowmen.

As a side note I will most likely be cooking a lot of holiday dishes too, but it doesn't matter to me. I am too determined to put it off now.

You should do the surgery sooner rather than later, JMHO.

I'm right there on the same page with ya sister!!!! This new year is going to be different, no more fad diets, no more slaving at the gym to shed 2 lbs a month. I'm starting 2012 1 month post sleeve!!!! Yep-eeeee :)

It is probably not the ideal time. I do worry a little. I would rather not have a lot of extended family around, just my immediate ones, but it is what it is. I will deal with it. My desire to begin 2012 already sleeved and somewhat recovered is much greater.

Having said that, I know I won't pick a date before November 12 though. I have awesome tickets to see Sting in concert and I won't miss it! We have to have our priorities straight, ya know. :P

I'm scheduled Nov. 15th. Yikes!!! I'm nervous! My insurance is good until end of the year too, so I'm in the same predicament as you. I could reschedule for December, but I'm honestly trying to read everything I can to prepare myself mentally for the Nov. 15th surgery. I have had carpal tunnel surgeries on both hands, shoulder surgeries on both shoulders (one was Sept, 14th), foot surgery 3 weeks ago, and several others within the past 2 years, none of which I was nervous about. I am really a mess about this one, though. I can't figure out exactly why, except for the possibility of complications & the restrictions afterwards. There seems to be such an emotional preparation that goes into this procedure for so many. Anyway, I need to make up my mind about keeping the Nov. 15th date or rescheduling this week so my husband can turn in some vacation time to be home with me & the kids a couple of days after surgery. Sorry I can't help much with your situation...but sometimes it helps to just know someone else is in the same predicament as you. Good luck with your decision! You will do fine no matter what you choose!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
