My Dr. decided not to use the needle recommended by the clinic who did the surgery. Instead he used a regular needle that would be used for a flu shot, as an example. I never had anything to numb the pain and I didn't feel a thing, I didn't even feel the first prick of the needle. He didn't find the centre of the port right away and hit metal a few times and I didn't even feel that.

I had 5 cc's and it took me over 1/2 hour to drink 1/4 bottle of Water so he took 1 out. Its been one week and I don't feel like 4 ccs is enough so I'm going back in 2 weeks for more.

I have the 10cc band.. I have had two fill for a total of 2 cc's. My doc is slow walking the fills because they don not want me to suffer the discomfort and inability to keep anything down... I am having my third fill on 18th of August because I still don't have any restriction. I hope this will be the one that puts me in that special place where I won't overeat.

I Have A 4cc Band And Have 3cc Of Fill. This Is My 4th. Fill And The One That Gave Me Restriction That I Needed. I Get My Fills With No Lidocaine And They Use A Big Spinal Needle. The Only Time I Had A Problem With A Fill Was With My Third Fill Because I Had Lost Weight And My Port Was Sitting Sideways, After About 10 Pokes With The Long Needle He Decided To Give Me Some Lidocaine, And Who Would Have Known, He Found The Port Right After That. I Love My Band And Am Very Happy With My Decision To Have Lapband Instead Of Gastric Bypass. :)

I've finally gotten up to 4.5 ccs in a 10 cc band and it took 3 fills to do that. Of course, the first fill didn't work at all so I went back the next week and got it filled again. My NP didn't charge me for that one. That lasted about a month and I went and got another 1.5 cc. I'm still not restricted enough so I'll have to drive back up there for another fill. It's a real pain. I figure I'll have to have 7 to 7.5 cc for the lapband to work. Apparently my stomach doesn't swell much from fills because I can eat soft food the next day. In fact, I could probably eat scrambled eggs right after the fill. I'm getting depressed about it, but the NP won't fill it very much for fear of overfilling it. I'm beginning to think we should push the envelope a little. I'm going to see my regular doc pretty soon and I may request a barium xray to see what is going on. If everything is flowing through really fast, I'll ask for a larger fill. I have the Swedish band. I would just like to lose some serious weight.:heh:

I feel like I can eat pretty much anything right now - I go for my first fill on August 17th. I don't know how much they tend to start with at my clinic, but I'll find out.

I have a 10cc VG band with NO fill. 15 weeks postop

Just saw my Doc today and I had lost 5 pounds since I was in 3 weeks ago. About a fill, he said don't fix it if it ain't broke!

If I eat the foods they suggest, dense protien 5 times a day, I really am not hungry. I've been eating about 40% protien, sometimes less, the rest vegtables and sometimes stuff that I'm not suppose to eat. So I'm going to try his food suggestions for 2 weeks and see how it goes.

My Doc said stats show that 30% of bandsters in Australia never need a fill.

My opinion: The band helps us lose weight, it isn't meant to do ALL the work, we have to work with it. Overfills can really be uncomfortable as well has hazardous to us.

Leona, from my experience, I had to stay hydrated no matter what. Try to sip a little all day or you'll get very weak and can end up in the hospital on an IV to get you back to square one. When I had a slipped band I got dehydrated and was on an IV for 5 days! Of course you have to eat too. Have you tried Isopure from GNC? It is liquid protien, real easy on the stomach. It worked real well for me post-op.

Eveyone is different, you may not need a fill. Take care of yourself.

Hi Health1st! I actually just got a fill on Monday... 2 ccs in my 4cc band (I posted this before I knew for sure what size band I have).. My doc was aggressive with the fill because I am leaving for school on Monday and he wanted me to succeed. It not impossible for me to come see him, but it will take planning. I am already feeling a difference with my band! I am happy that I can start using my tool. For a while there, it was like having a tool kit in the back of a shed without the key to the shed. Now I have the key.

I've tried ISOPURE and I couldn't stand it! lol I've been using Permalean (chocolate) with vanilla soymilk and a few drops of mint extract. I have also used whey Protein, which is good. I have no trouble getting my Protein in each day... just the Water is sometimes hard. But I'm trying and sipping constantly. I finally understand what it is to sip sip sip! Before the fill, I could gulp and drink Water quickly so it helped me stay hydrated.

Thanks to everyone for making this a really interesting thread! I had no idea that it would be popular lol I was just REALLY curious about it!

Happy Losing :)

Leona, That's great. Isn't it funny how the little things, like gulping Water becomes so precious. Instead of donunts, I couldn't wait to eat a carrot and gulp water. Keep us posted on how you are doing. You are young with your whole life ahead of you, how exciting. And it is so wonderful that you won't have to struggle with weight your entire life unlike some of us old "farts". And have some fun at school.

Thanks Health1st!

I'm gonna do my best to work this band... I hope it won't be too difficult in the big apple... I'm looking forward to going back to school and being a "loser" lol. My friends are all so supportive and are all helping me with an exercise plan. I can't wait to show them that it works!

Congrats on your weightloss so far and good luck with your losing in the future!

I'm in a 10cc band, 80% filled and can still eat chicken and anything else I want, and if I didn't restrict what I ate, I would be able to eat way more then I should. The problem is i'm starving hungry a lot of the time. I hope my next fill does it for me.

wow 503-250... I hope it helps you too.. I can't imagine having the feeling of starving all the time... hugs to you!

But the feeling of losing is probably helping the feeling of starvation!

Thanks for responding!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
