October 11, Dr. Aceves....I'm nervous!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

OK! I booked my surgery for Oct 11 with Dr. Aceves. I decided to go with him bc of all the amazing reviews I have heard and all the research I have done. I was feeling so stoked and ready, and now.....I AM FREAKING TERRIFIED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not bc of anything to do with Mexico, or going alone, or the money or anything logistical like that...just bc of the surgery itself. I am in my mid-thirties and have never had ANY SURGERY BEFORE! I HAVE NEVER EVEN BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL!

I do know however, that if I dont do this, I will eventually spend alot of time in a Hospital BC of my horrible eating habits over the last 25 years. My luck is gonna run out. That is something i tell myself but right now, its isnt helping!

I'm scared of the IV (how long is it in there for?), Im scared of the drains being pulled out (yikes!), Im scared I wont sleep or I wont get enough pain meds (geek!) Im scared Im gonna cry like a baby.... I need some reassurance before i chicken out like a LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously. Am I the only freak who feels (felt) like this????

You sound exactly like me a week before my surgery!! I can tell you that it is NOT as bad as you think! Dr. Aceves is great, and the hospital and staff were great....They had my IV in for 2 days (day of surgery and 1 day after), the drain coming out wasn't bad AT ALL!!! It felt more like a ripple going through the belly, up and out. I DID cry like a baby when I went into the surgery room!!! I felt really stupid, but I swear they laid me out on the table, and quickly put me to sleep...no counting backwards, no "Okay here it goes!" , which I think was best for me!! The only pain I ever felt was from the gas, and it was in my shoulder....the nurses come in like clockwork giving you more pain meds in your IV, and honestly you hardly feel any pain at all from the surgery. I was super scared, terrified even, and I went to Dr. A alone, but I knew I had to do this to take back my life....you are going to be fine, you are going to hate the first week after surgery, but then everything will slowly get better.....this is the start of a new life for you!!!

Good luck to you and God Bless!!

Yes, I felt the same way. I had no nerves until I had a date and had made the deposit. I told myself that I could back out at any time and that seemed to help me. BUT, I didn't. I took my Ativan the night before surgery and I was very calm on surgery day. It was my first surgery, and first time in a hospital too. Dr. Aceves medicates you very well and I had no nausea, vomiting, and hardly any pain. The IV didn't bother me (it's only in two days) but the drain (in for three days) was annoying. It didn't hurt coming out but I could feel my insides moving to fill the space it had taken up, it felt kind of squirmy for a second and then everything was fine again. I mostly slept the first two days and maybe 2/3 of the third day. It's not at all bad and over quick. I am so happy I had it done.

I'll be having my VSG October 10th w/ Aceves! I'm also in my mid 30's, (33), but I've had countless surgeries in my lifetime. I still get a little freaked out though.

Thanks guys!!!! I spoke yesterday to a close friend who had gastric bypass last year, which i thought might be even scarier (lol) and she was THRILLED I chose to book my sleeve! She said it was absolutely the BEST decision she has ever made and if she could do anything over again it would be to have gotten it sooner. She also said the pain was minimal and I know for a fact she was prbly more scared than I am!!!!! YAY!

I went alone also. It was such a smooth experience with so few after effects that it usually felt like I hadn't had any surgery at all. The medical staff and hospital are excellent, you will be in the best hands, and this will be the best gift you ever gave yourself. Good luck!

Hi "A New Day"

I'll be heading home from Dr. Aceves the day of your surgery. Maybe I'll see you while your doing your testing on the 9th. I'm sure by then I'll be really ready to go home and hopefully walking the walls.

See you there!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
