Weight Gained Since Having Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm brand new to this group, and this is one of the very reasons I joined. I have been "stuck" since March or April. My weight will fluctuate from 1-3 pounds in a week....usually going up. This week I gained 2.6 pounds and I just don't understand why. Ok, I haven't been the most conscious about my diet (I LOVE my Mickey D's mochas....with nonfat milk) and I haven't exercised since I had a medical issue and subsequent surgery (nothing bariatric-related). Any ideas on how I can "jumpstart" my weight loss? I need to lose about 37 more pounds. Thank you!!

the 5:2 eating plan seems to work pretty well

for wls patients.

I am at 9 months post op. I will have a weight loss then bounce back and forth for a few days before settling at the new weight. usually the swing is about 2 pounds.

You are just a babe in the process. Most of us on this thread have been out a year or much longer and either reached their goal with some regain or never quite got to their goal.

You are experiencing a very normal part of the journey. So, when you read these posts, understand that the issues are more specific to being further along.

How long have you been stalled? How much more do you want to lose?

Here is a link to the 5:2 plan. Several people have reported much success.

Hi everyone! I'm so happy to find this group again. My surgery was Aug 2011 and I weighed 278. I got down to 178 that first year, but then went back up to 185 for a whole year. Now I'm at 203 and very sad. I'd like to get 20-25 pounds off. I've just lost my drive to do better this last year. I'm looking for some encouragement and support from people who've been there. I still have pretty good restriction, I just eat all the time, and bad stuff. Please help me get back to a place where I feel good about me. Thanks in advance.

You know what you need to do. Get back on the horse. This plan was never about loose it then forget about it. The non negotiables for me are: no mater what I eat, I have to write it down (I use Myfitnesspal), get in your Protein first most of the time, and enough every day... when you are still hungry, eat veggies or protein, and have decent Snacks around the house at all times. Plan snacks if you are a snacker. Drink your water... and NOT with your food, or right after. Make moving part of your life. It doesn't have to be organized sports or the gym. Just move, a few times a week is best. I used the 5:2 to get of a 22 pound regain during the 2nd year. I use the 5:2 to keep it off. I set a goal that was not a vanity goal... which may be harder to get to and keep off. I got rid of my bigger sized clothing... I am at 3 1/2 years and am currently at 2 pounds above the top of my goal range ( a three pound range that signals I am at goal. When I go over I start the actions to get things back on track) I am pretty sure I will have to do this the rest of my life. When I stop this routine, I gain. I am very happy that I have managed to find a plan that allows me to stay at this weight pretty much predictably. I wish I didn't have to hold such a tight hand on my eating, but really, with the help of the sleeve, It works, which earlier diets did not.

You are absolutely right! I know exactly what I need to do. I always begin great and then mess up by the end of the day. I use MFP. My doc has me taking an Iron supplement every day because I am extremely low. When I take that and eat my Protein I can be stopped up for days. It's gets uncomfortable. But you are right, I need to stop whining and get back on track. How long did it take you to lose the 22lbs?

I think the key is to remember why we did this in the first place. And then remember how we got in the frame of mind to lose weight, and follow the same plan.

I have been post-op 7 months now and I have weeks where I have gains. I can pinpoint why I gain. It is because I am NOT getting my Protein Drinks in, and I eat even when satisfied. My advice (for what it's worth) is to get those Protein drinks back in your body and get in the proper frame of mind to stop eating when you are satisfied, using the 30-60 rule as well. I also try to walk instead of snacking in the evening. I hope this helps....and remember it's a long journey and not a sprint.

Cheers,

Greg

Protein, Water and veg etc... i get so down i eat badly which makes it worse... i know what to do, i know it is in my head..... it has to be! I knew it wouldn't be easy, that it is a tool, but boy is it hard when i feel so hungry all the time... i keep reading about portion being about half a cup, but i seem to need so much more....

Thanks for the link, just read this "Your attitude even affects your hunger hormones—specifically ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates hunger. In a study at Yale University, researchers had each of 46 participants drink an identical 380-calorie milkshake on two separate occasions. During one test, they were told that they were enjoying an "indulgent" 680-calorie shake. The other time they were told that it was a "sensible" shake with 140 calories. The researchers measured levels of ghrelin during several points of the experiment. Ghrelin levels dropped more steeply among those who drank what they thought were "indulgent" shakes. Those participants also reported feeling more full."
Huh, looks like it is more in my head than I though :D

I am much further out than you, but I eat WAY more than half a cup. A half cup of dense Protein may fill me up. but I can eat 2 cups or even more of some foods. Soups, salads, mixed veggies....I say just keep track of your feeling.... meaning tight stomach feelings... you don't want that, but maybe you do need to eat more. I add a pile of veggies to at least one of my meals a day. Also, sometimes acid can make you feel hungry... or thirst...

have you heard of the faux bypass? they hypnotize the person to believe they have had the surgery. apparently for people who are good subjects, they can lose as much or more weight as someone who has had the actual surgery!

LOL!

No, I had not heard of faux bypasses, so I googled it and found this:

What utter bullshit. Pure anecdotal, unsubstantiated, un-peer-reviewed baloney. Reminds me of "The Road to Wellville."

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
