1 week out. Almost every sip hurts.

Recommended Posts

I am taking the tiniest sips imaginable and it hurts! I'm having such a hard time getting fluids in and I'm a week out of surgery. Each time I take a sip, I have pain in my chest right below my rib cage and straight through to my back. It feels like it's probably gas pain, but I'm not positive. It makes taking my daily meds and Vitamins an all day event and it sucks. Is this normal? I'm terrified that this is some kind of sign of a leak. I've tried room temperature, refrigerated, and warm liquids. I've tried Water, Gatorade G2, apple juice, drinkable yogurt, DanActive, veggie broth, Tomato Soup, and Oh Yeah (which is like Muscle Milk). Popsicles hurt too, but not as much. I'm at my wit's end. I don't know how I'm supposed to get anything in when each sip hurts. It's like extreme aversion therapy. By the time I'm finally healed, I won't be able to look at liquids again.

Can you guys tell me how you were doing a week out from surgery and if what I have going on is abnormal?

I am having my own set of issues right now that are freaking me out, but I can't imagine what you must be going through. I can drink ok. I just hope you call your doctor.

Not only did I have that painful lump feeling when drinking Water but at around day 7 I started getting heartburn too. I thought it was so strange that swallowing yogurt was easier than swallowing water. And yes, that made getting pills down hard too, I think that's why the NUT had me buy as many chewables as possible. The doctor is letting me take Prilosec for the heartburn and it has gone away. Well, I got much better by day 11. The lump in my throat was completely gone by day 15. I started pureed food today and have had no problems thus far. It will get better with time, don't worry!!

I had pain when swallowing for about 4 weeks BUT it does get better. Remember you had a tube down your throat and 80% of your stomach dissected, so your body has to adjust to the new anatomy.

Keep sipping, the pain gets better from one day to the next. Once you are fine with fluids, soft foods will have the same effect, and so on. The good news is that it doesn't last forever and the weight will start melting off. I can tell you IT SO WORTH IT AND TRY TO REMAIN POSITIVE AND :rolleyes:FOCUSED ON THE END RESULT.

Take care

My doctor has put me on Levsin (an antispasmodic) and it has done wonders for the spasms. I take it under my tongue four times a day. I hope you get relief soon.

Gosh Jackie, I am SO glad you posted! I am four days out and have almost exactly the same symptoms. I am almost pain free till I start to drink my liquids, and then I get these "spasms". It doesn't seem to matter what I drink, the spasms come. I went outside the US to have my surgery done, since my insurance wouldn't pay one dime towards it, and haven't told my primary care physician yet. (I am sure he will disapprove) But I was on the verge of calling him to see if I was having some type of serious complication. Reading all the responses to your post reasured me a lot. Thanks for posting! KathyD49

What's happening is that your esophogus is trying to squeeze the liquid into a swollen stomach, which causes a back-up in your esophogus and it begins to contract! That's what the spasms are. Like a contraction when giving birth but in your esophogus. I had this pain for almost 5 weeks b/c I was so swollen. Everything hurt!! Water, juice, pops, Soup, etc. I wasnt able to get a full 64oz of liquid in until a few weeks ago and I'm 9wks out! But... I can honestly say it does get better! As soon as your stomach starts to heal, you will be able to drink and eat normally, without the pain! It's perfectly normal and will go away! My advice is to take smaller sips and breathe, relax, and take your time!

I'm also one of the former painful swallowers post op. It was extremely painful for me for the first two weeks, but it continued to get better every week after. I think it lasted about 4-6 weeks before it was completely gone. I now have zero pain when swallowing (unless I take too big a bite or go over my full stop).

It will continue to get better all the time, for now rest and work through the pain. You must do your very best to get all your fluids in! Hang in there, all this will be *so* worth it in time. :)

ETA: if it gets too bad, I would urge you to seek medical advice. Good luck!

Are you serious? Were you constantly getting the tight throat, quivering stomach when you would drink your Water or Protein drink? I wonder if I could ask my doctor for this to try and help. I'm feeling awful, not being able to get any liquids down.

Relax and don;t stress this- you are only two days out! My turnaround day was day 5- get what you can in and don't beat yourself up over it. The other people posting here are much further out than you.

One tip is to have a very small container- I had little plastic one ounce cups from the hospital- and set your photne time for every 15 minutes and try to drink two ounces. Just two ounces. Don't push for more. If you do that all day you will get more in than you thought you could! I marked my little cups off on a pad of paper for the first week or ten days until I was assured I could start with a liter bottle of Water and drink the whole thing. I still use my timer- every 8 minutes now.But now I know I can drink two liters- yesterday I drank 3.

It WILL get better!

Oh my goodness! I made myself get on here today to see if anyone else was having this issue. I was sleeved on June 20th and everything I sip is painful and It feels like spasms. I remember telling my nurse that it felt like contractions from child birth just higher! It is impossible to get in the amount of fluids needed. Its even a job to take my elixir pain med. I pray that this gets better quickly because I am truly feeling a little sorry for myself and upset that I did this to me. Prayers needed.:(

I'm still pre-op and this post is somewhat scary and also enlightening. Just another thing to prepare for, I guess. But I am sending good thoughts and energies out for those of you having this trouble right now, and hoping that you reach the turning point soon.

I'm getting sleeved on the 29th and this post is scary...so y don't u go to the ER to get iv fluids??

Funny you should ask this, because that's exactly what I did!

I started to feel dizzy and light-headed on Tuesday (right after making this post), so I went to Urgent Care to get help. They weren't able to help me and sent me to the ER. The ER kept me overnight and gave me 2 bags of IV fluids and tried to control my pain with morphine. I was then admitted to the hospital and kept there until this morning. While in the hospital, I was steadily hydrated via IV and given morphine, dilaudid, norco, and percocet to manage pain. I was given a CT scan, a broad spectrum antibiotic, placed on a bowel program, anti-nausea meds, antacids, and told to walk walk walk! I was fed a clear liquid diet and visited by the staff dietician in addition to my doctor and the nursing staff.

The doctor and radiology declared my surgery a resounding success. They said that my incisions were perfect, I had no leaks and my organs all looked fine. The antibiotics were given as a precaution in case any bacteria from my stomach was floating around in my abdomen causing trouble and because of my UTI. I was released this morning and I'm doing much better. I have been ordered to do a clear liquid diet for another week, then 2 weeks of a full liquid diet, then 2 weeks of a soft diet, then back to regular foods. I can't tolerate much except popsicles, juice, and tea, but my pain is GREATLY reduced. I'm going to try broth today to see how that goes. I'm also going to discontinue my Vitamins until I'm eating more substantial foods because I think they were hard on my tummy. I'm much happier now that I've been since the surgery. Thanks to the steady flow of saline from my IV, I've gained 3 lbs since being admitted and I feel sooooo muuuuuch better.

The Sharp staff dietician gave me a very detailed diet plan to follow during recovery. If anyone thinks they might like to see it, let me know and I'll scan the pages for you guys.

Sorry if I scared anyone, but I'm glad to have put this episode out there. I hope it helps someone!

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
