Greek Yogurt Protein question

Recommended Posts

I see all this talk about Protein poweders and I know right after surgery you really can't eat thick foods, but later on, why can't you eat greek yogurt to get most of your protein. I love Fage 0% total greek yogurt. 1 cup has 23 gms of protein.

Just wondering. I hate powdered drinks. But going out tomorrow to GNC to get a few samples of some to try them out before my surgery.

Thanks for any info.

You could, absolutely, try to get your protein from food, including greek yogurt. However, I was supposed to have 60+ grams of protein per day, and early out I could not eat more than a tablespoon of yogurt at a sitting. Plus, I am low-carbing, and dairy has a lot of carbs when you are counting every one and trying to stay under 30. I do eat it now, but a third of a cup is plenty for a serving. I eat a lot of shrimp, scallops, fish, and deli meat to make my protein goals--not too many shakes these days.

I eat a lot (way more than any human I know) of the Fage 2% Cherry Flavored Greek Yogurt. I am almost a year out from a revision from band to VSG. It's a thick product as you know and I'm not sure a few months after surgery if I could have even gotten one down of the little pour over type containers. I can now eat 2 of them back to back and often do for a light lunch, but I am STUFFED to the max when I do. I agree that the Protein drinks are yuck. The only way I was able to get them down was Isopure fruit ones, I don't recall the name, but even they get slimy if they seperate so you must keep it well shaken.

Best of luck!

You can eat yogurt to get your Protein in later on. That is what I do to help get my daily intake in. Did your Dr. or someone tell you that you shouldn't?

The RDA of Protein for an average weight women ages 19-50 is ~50 g. Since most of us are on high Protein and low carb diet, you may need more than 50 grams of protein. So this means, you would need 2 cups of greek yogurt daily just to reach the amount set by RDA. Moreover, I doubt it that you would be able to finish 4 oz of Greek yogurt in the first 6 months after surgery. It takes me half an hour to finish 6 oz of GY and I'm almost 5 months out of surgery. Therefore, you need to get used to drinking Protein drinks in the first few months after surgery. I don't recommend pre-made drinks for two reasons (1) Big in size (11 - 17 oz) to me that's torture; pre-made drinks are not the most amazing thing to drink. (2) They tend to be thick in texture: so a few sips and you feel full for hours and therefore you don't get your daily protein. What I recommend is a whey Protein Isolate powder and a chocolate Syrup (I personally use unsweetened cocoa powder). You put 8 oz of cold Water, a scoop of protein and 1/2tbsp of cocoa powder and shake everything in a Protein Shaker. The final result is in liquid form and very close to Water in viscosity. I can finish it in about 15 minutes. GL

Thanks everyone for your input. I can't wait until I can try yogurt again. I have to wait until 3 weeks post surgery. I hope I still like it.

My nut said I could put some in my Protein drinks as long as its thinned out enough to go through a strainer, I might try one today to see if it will work or not.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
