Hello everyone.. I moved to NY 2 years ago from Missouri when I got married. I have a house in New Hyde Park and now living in Upstate NY near Albany. I was first in the Bariatric Program at Albany Medical Center but have had the worst time with the nurses and Dr's there so I have recently switched to Dr. Garber at the NY Bariatric Group in New Hyde Park.

I currently have all of my clearance's that I need for the surgery and will have my surgery date very soon according to what the nurse said at Dr Garber's office.. I am very excited and looking for a end of October or at the very least 1st of November surgery date .... WOOHOO!!! It's been a hell of a journey,, i'm sure everyone can relate to... I have lost 55lbs in the last 9 months though by dieting and exercising but can't lose anymore weight doing the same things that made me lose the first 55lbs so I need a little extra help to get me down another 100lbs....

I am currently 255 and 5'6 so my BMI is right at 41.. I can't wait to see what this next year brings my way.. i know it's going to be hard but I'm totally up for the challenge.

I was wondering if anyone here has had there Sleeve done by any of the surgeons at the New York Bariatric Group in New Hyde Park.. just wanting to know how every thing went from Pre op to post op... hope to chat with you guys more !!

I am attaching a picture of me 9 months ago at 310lbs and now me at 55lbs lost

Welcome Shenna! Congratulations on your pre-op weight loss. 55 pounds is def a milestone! The great news is that you're already on your way to living healthier because you've begun to change your habits and when you combine that mindset with a tool like the sleeve, you're bound to be successful!

I dont know anyone who has done the sleeve at the NYBG, but there's was one of the first websites I perused when I began my sleeve research. I called their office and found that they didnt take my insurance, so I left them alone. I gotta say I was really impressed by their website and all the great reviews I've read about Dr. Garber.

Please be sure to keep us abreast of your progress, and your surgery date. I TRY to pop in from time to time and check in on my NY crew, but I'm not always the best at doing that (sometimes life just gets in the way, I'm sure you know what I mean!). Be strong, Be encouraged, Be inquisitive! There is a wealth of knowledge and ideas from everyone here on VST. Take advantage of it all!

Where did u have your surgery?

I had my surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, with Dr. Mitchell Roslin. He is the best! I have a lot of scar tissue from previous surgeries and laparoscopically he was able to work around the scar tissue.

Lali,

Congratulations on your weight loss, i'm sure there's lots more to lose!

Have you discussed this with your nutritionist or surgeon? It could be from the types of food you're eating or maybe you need an acid reducer type med to take before your meals. Have you been logging your food intake? It might help you to look back and take note of the foods you are eating. Maybe you need to switch things up a bit...I don't have a direct answer because I'm new at this too! I think the best thing to do is contact your doctor's office so they can help you figure it all out.

Keep us posted!

Hi everyone, I am originally from Queens, NY and now reside in Orange County...Harriman. It would be great if we can arrange once a month in person meetings or something like that...don't know...just a thought...

I am having surgery on 1/3/12 with Dr Kelly in Mexico. Very excited!!! I wish everyone on here luck on their own journeys with the VSG. :)

I would LOVE to have a monthly group thing, but not sure how successful it would be, especially since we are all so spread out across the state. There are some members here who are in the upstate - maybe you can reach out to them to start a group, and maybe those of us downstate could try and hook up, and we could do a big meet up sometime when the weather is nice?

If anyone is interested, let's try to get it going!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
