Careful what you stock up on.... I did that and have a cupboard full of sugar free applesauce, sugar free pudding & sugar free Jello, , etc.. you get the picture. I had read that your tastes could change after surgery and mine did! I use to love yogart, ate it 3-4 times a week prior to surgery, now,, nope,, cant do it now and the same for a few other items that I use to really like, now I dont. The stuff I bought ahead of time, I over bought and I couldnt eat half of the stuff I bought prior to surgery, its still in my cupboard now - 5 months later!

The only advise I can give you is to try some samples of protien mix... buying the powder and mixing yourself is less expensive.... some places have sample packets so you can try instead of having to buy a huge 2 lb container.. Barix stores on line have sample packs.... A fellow sleever told me to find a protien mix that I like b/4 surgery cause I will need it for sure after surgery and she was right!

Great advice, your tastebuds change. I threw out more protien shakes, powders and drinks post op. Some I could tolerate before but not after. My tastebuds changed but now are someone back to normal. Except at 8 months out I still do not like fast food burgers or pizza.

Good news is that your grocery bill will be cut in half or more. So take that money and you can buy yourself a few things. Your health is at stake so you need to be most concerned about getting in the proper nutrition post op. No matter what the cost. An unhealthy you is not an option, right? Good luck and maybe look under the preop/postop diet forum for more ideas on what to get.

I agree with the others. I have lots of food in my cupboards that I "thought" I would eat/drink post-op. And some of the foods that I ate during the two week pre-op diet, I could not tolerate after surgery. Save your $$ and make your purchases after surgery. For me, Protein drinks were (still are) the hardest. I have to have them to up my Protein counts, but I don't really like any of them for long. 4-5 days and I am moving on to try another brand. Best wishes to you for your surgery and new life!

Yes, your taste buds do change; however, you do need to purchase some things to have on hand when you get home from the hospital and the week after. Here is a few things you'll want on hand:

chicken, Veggie, Beef broth!

Clear Protein drinks, either RTD (ready to drink) and/or powdered mix - I used Isopure RTD as well as Syntrax nectar mixes (I purchased the sample pack from www.mybariatricpantry.com) I highly recommend you doing this now and saving it for after surgery!! It's only like $13.00 and they give you one of each flavor! I also purchased the bariatric hot chocolate from them and drink it every morning.

Creamed Soups like Campbell's soups- your choice of flavors

Progresso soups- this is great blended up for added flavor after the broth gets old

Fage greek yogurt - you can flavor it up with splenda and/or crystal light

SF Pops

SF Jello

SF pudding

You can also make homemade veggie Soup, chicken Soup, etc and freeze them in small containers and defrost them as needed

Again, go to www.mybariatricpantry.com and check out their samples! You need to pay attention to their carb/protein contents tho on some of their products. Some of their RTD stuff has caffeine in them. But if you buy their sample packs of Isopure and Syntrax Nectar, you're safe!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
