Pain under ribs/chest after sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hello, I had the sleeve done last week, all was well I got to go home from hospital 24 hours and no pain meds since... I lost 10lbs in one week I felt good i am on liquid only diet ....Last night 10pm I started having a pain under my right rib, then it went to my left rib and a little in my back....I went to bed and put a heating pad on for a while...then this am I woke up and pain was stil lthere....I took liquid tylenol and it went away about an hour....I bought some gas x strips and doc office said to try to take mag citrate to help clear me out.....so I just started that.......so far I don't feel sick at all or have a fever....

I just started the Protein Shakes 2 days ago...not sure if they had something to do with it.....I been walking, cleaning etc and feel great all week besides that pain so I been in bed all day minus about an hour ...... I also been taking the vit bi, the gallstone pills and the axid pills.....other than that just Water, crytal light etc....

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I tried the gas x strips and the doc suggested taking the mag citrate the bowel prp stuff to see if that would help but so far noting- I have been getting my walking in and doing alot around the house. my hub thinks that maybe I pulled a muscle? the pain is mostly in the center unless I take a deep breath or yell then I can feel it under my ribs as well.....

I have had the same thing. I had it really bad last week (my 3rd week out). I called my doc and he put me on hyasciamine (sp?) twice a day. It is to calm spasms, which is what he thought it was. It has helped greatly. One night it was so bad that all I could do was pace the floor. It lasted about 15 minutes that time.

If you saw my thread about day 17 today- that place in your chest is actually where the opening of your thumby is (thumb/tummy ;-P). So anything going on in that area is related to trouble getting the food in , too much in, trouble digesting, etc.

Also, you may be recovering from the C02 they pump you with during surgery. Same thing happened to me.

I ended up having to go to Accident and Emergency for scans on about day 10 because I was in so much pain I thought I had a leak. It turned out to be acid indigestion.... I felt pretty silly!

Your pain sounds pretty similar to what I had, with the deep breath in making it worse etc...

Are you taking a PPI or antacids?

by the way be very careful doing things around the house- I am not to lift more than 5 pounds for a month- it can hurt our new thumbys! It can wait.... your stomach is for life.

WOW- that's about how I feel- the doc office said if I don't feel better by today come on in- but from what I am hearing it's usually nothing...

Yes I take the axid - twice a day- doc started me on that pre op....

Yes, my pain was more about a week and a half after surgery. Just as you described. It finally went away, but it was annoying! When I took deep breaths I could feel the pain. From under my ribs to my shoulder blades. The doctor told me its because of the C02 from when they perform the surgery. They need to pump you up to get some space in there to move around.

My doc said it was acid and prescribed 80mg of Protonic and reglan 4x a day. I was also given Ativan to relax the muscle. I have just now finally found some relief. I had surgery in Mexico and had to go to the ER Twice to get help. Now I have a local doc who will see me and follow my care now that they know my sleeve was done very well. Go figure. Acid can do this.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
