Hey Everyone,

I'm a week out before the sleeve with Dr.Umbach in Las Vegas.I live in Alaska and let me say that it was difficult to find a surgeon with good credentials in my price range.I am having the worse time with pre op diet.I am soooo hungry all the time.Especially the evening hours.I drink about 4 to 6 shakes a day with my 1 lean meal. And i'm still hungry.Any tips to help combat this?I have also been using Sarah Lee sliced turkey, when i absolutely have to eat.

I did go to GNC and found a killer shake.GNC Total Lean in the Cookies and cream flavor.I have tried many and this is the best so far. They also had these little shaker cups with a wire wisk ball.Works great. How important is the pre op food intake?I can't wait for the surgery so i won't be hungry anymore!mellow.gif

Hang on in there, it will be worth it. I found it hard too, but soon all that will change. Jane x

My place supplied the stuff. A lot of people thought that was bad and gave me that feedback. Now I'm really glad. It's six boxes of 7 packets of powder that you add Water to. It's that simple. I've been very surprised. While there have been moments of hunger, I find that if I distract myself for a while it passes. Honestly, I have bought more eBay crap this week than I ever have in my life.

My doctor requires 100% compliance to the program or he will not operate. They do a blood test and urine as well as ask you. If they open you up and can't do the surgery due to a fatty liver (which is the primary point of the diet), your costs will greatly increase as you will have to pay for a second go round.

That said, I think you have the right idea about how you are "cheating". Using a low carb item will have the least impact on your body being in keotosis and burning off that liver fat.

The true impact is very individualized. Where you carry your weight impacts the surgeon's ability to move around inside you, how much weight you have lost while in your program as you worked up to the pre-diet is a big factor. So it's really hard to tell. But we were told that one of 3 things would happen: If the blood/urine indicates you have not been compliant you will be sent home for a do over or 2) the surgery can be canceled after they have opened you and see that the liver is too fatty to safely work with or 3) your surgery will require larger incisions, possibly up to being open surgery. I do know a woman who was sent home for an additional week of fasting and I know one who was told her liver was very borderline and caused the surgeon trouble. But, interestingly enough, the second woman followed the pre-diet to the letter. I think it was more just a health issue with her.

So do your very best, especially if your body has not been in losing mode up until now. I'd try especially to tighten down in those last 3 days before surgery.

Good luck on your plan. It will be really nice to get to the place where minimal food this isn't a big deal anymore.

The whole reason for the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver to make the surgery safer and easier. You really should do everything you can to comply. I know it is hard, but it will be so much easier on you and the surgeon.

I have heard of people being sent home for not doing what the surgeon asked.

Good luck to you. Just rememeber that you can do anything!! And it is not forever. Take it one day at a time and you will be o.k.

Hi again -

I hope you get this message.

I was interested in the Go Lean Cookies and Cream so I looked it up. According to the label it has 180 calories per serving. You need to be very, very careful as this is very high calorie for being in pre-op diet mode.

I have 6 packets per day from my doctor and they are 80 calories per pack. That's all I am allowed along with sugar free Jello and popcicles if I want them. They want my daily intake to be 650 or less.

I'm concerned that you have not been given clear guidelines on what this pre-op phase is supposed to be like. I really thought the Go Lean would be about 90 to 100 calories each, more along the lines of the EAS Low Carb drinks.

Since you don't mention your weight or what your normal calories per day intake is, you may still be fine but based on my program's pre-op diet, I think you really need to call them and get some clarity on what your calorie/carb per day intake needs to be for your surgery to be successful.

Good luck!

I was allowed SF popsicles, Jello and all the broth i could eat, crystal light, and unsweetened tea. And for the week i thought i was gonna go nuts. I ate broth 6 and 7 times a day. devoured jello and was still hungry. But after the first week, it started getting easier. I agree with the keeping busy cause if i wasnt thinking about it, i was golden. it was when i had down time, i went crazy. I also took a lot of naps. seemed to help out. i know its hard, and as if the pre op liquid diet was hard, i thought for sure then post op would be miserable. but no....i came out of surgery and havent been hungry since. sounds crazy. but i haven't gotten that 'chew my arm off' feeling since right before surgery. I love it, and it was well worth those 2 weeks. hang in there!!!

Hi Hopefulone! GNC has a Protein powder called Amplified Wheybolic and it has 60 grams of Protein pure shake. I was having one between 7:30~8:00am every morning for Breakfast and it would hold me over until around 1pm, then I would have a second shake, which held me over until I could get home and have dinner around 6pm. I'm not on the Clear liquids stage, but I do plan to continue with the GNC Amp Wheybolic drinks once I'm back to full liquids. It's a little pricier and there are not as many survings as others, but to me its well worth it to get so much protein in one shake and to feel so satisfied. I've only tried the chocolate so far. Definitely doesn't taste like chocolate milk to me like Muscle milk does, but its okay and again...well worth it to me. Just a suggestion. Hope it helps.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
