When you have surgery you will wake up in pain they will give you pain medicine and ice chips(your mouth will be as dry as tree bark..lol) I kept the ice chips on the table and let them melt and started swishing my mouth out to get my mouth wet. Then I started taking small sips. Second day they will give you a baratric tray with clear liquids..They will also give you as much Water as you want . Oh I forgot you need to get up the first day and walk ,walk ,and walk. The more you walk the sooner you will get better and the more gas you will move.. Any way the second day try to get as much fluids in as well as walk. If you feel nausea or hurt they will be there to help you out.. Any way walk and walk and sip and sip. You will have to get your water to 64 ounces. The second day I got a total of 30 ounces.. Every day after the second you will have to work at upping your water intake..I met my water intake goal in one week. I didn't worry about my Protein for at least a week. It is really important to stay on your doctor's diet for the first 6 weeks.. You will do well and I hope I really answered all the question you had..

JenniferKY,

I packed slip on slippers, a short robe to cover my backside when I go out in the hall to walk, an eye mask to be able to sleep at night, earplugs, gas-x strips, sugar free cough drops, travel size deodorant, toothpaste, and face wash, chapstick, my own fluffy soft blanket. That is what I have packed so far but I still will be packing a few other things that I just thought of while writing this like a hairbrush. What have you packed so far?

I also packed tweezers and I bought one of those little travel pillows at Walgreens because I saw a post somewhere that said it is good to have a little pillow to press on your belly when you are getting up/down and coughing. If you have a walgreens nearby, I paid $4.99 I think and it even came with a little pillowcase.

I am only staying one night so I don't think I'm going to take Shampoo and a hair dryer. How about you?

yeah, I am not taking Shampoo or the hair dryer either b/c I don't think I will be showering while at the hospital...if I do I will just have my husband run out and get it for me. I was thinking of getting the pillow also so thanks for the advice. If you think of anything else please let me know.

My surgery is the 14th! I am super nervous. I read somewhere, can't remember where, that a nurse told a sleever that when she got nauseous to sniff an alcohol pad. She said it took the nausea away instantly. So I got me some alcohol pads packed for that reason. It is worth the try at least. Also, when we get home, sucking on a lemon gets rid of nausea I hear. I am getting so nervous. Trying to read success stories. So far, everyone says it feels like you have been hit by a Mac truck. Also at first, they say, what have I done to myself. Then later nobody regrets it! So I am focusing on the later! :) Good luck and try the alcohol pads! You never know!

Hi Jennifer! I hope you are doing good today! Tomorrow is our bid day! :) I can't believe you are staying 1 day only. My doc is making me stay for 3 days. I am not sure if I envy you and would love to go home or if I want to be at the hospital through the worst of it. TIme will tell!! Good luck tomorrow. I can't wait to hear how you do!

Too funny! I'll definitely get some alcohol pads. We are being sleeved the same day, Dazy!

Are you going home with a pain pump? They are sending me home with one, maybe that's the difference. No idea. Anyway, good luck to you tomorrow as well. Post on here as soon as you can so we can compare notes!!!!! :D

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
