Congrats on the weight loss! Unfortunately some African amercan's skin have the tendency to keloid, but a doctor/dermatologist can remove that it will be another proceedure that has to get done. Talk to your surgeon see what he/she suggests.

Has anyone experienced any depression since being sleeved? I have been sad for at least 3 weeks.

I have not been sleeved yet but I have read on these boards that many go through a depression period, that primarily has to do with hormonal changes in your body from the surgery and weight loss, hang in there I heard it passes soon :)

I've been off the forum for a couple of weeks, so I'm jumping back in! First of all, I was not offended by Kayte's question, whether or not we as individuals choose to address it, body size is a definate issue to many African American men. I have been African Anerican for 39 years, I have 27 AA blood brothers and "booty, hips & boobs" always seem to come up in conversations. I don't know why so many AA men (not all) are attracted to overly voluptuous body parts, but it's a fact in the AA community. Since I've started losing weight, I've heard all sorts of what I feel are ignorant comments--like don't lose your booty cause Brotha's don't like bags of bones--Personally, I have always thought this journey was about health, not about trying to look like an overweight Betty Boop to satisfy our husbands, boyfriends & significant others. But since our men folks are a part of our lives, we have to take their tender feelings into consideration, correct? My solution to the body shaping issue is simple-working out. My glutes may not be as generous as before my weight loss, but they can be toned & firm thanks to regular exercise. The same can be said for my thighs & arms. Moving onto the depression issue, in my 2nd week post-op; I went through a period of "OMG/What have I done?" I feel this is a natural response in dealing with so many major changes at one time. This surgery is a complete game-changer, the recovery is difficult for many and we all have to deal with it's effect on the people in our lives. I truly appreciate this forum and all the people here. We are here for support & education, not to judge & belittle. So many times in the last 11 weeks, this forum has been my only source of information & help and I hope it will continue to be that way for everyone, me included. We are on the journey of a lifetime and we need each other to succeed. Sorry to ramble...had to get all that off my chest.

Once again, I'll agree to disagree. I don't think that it's a researched based "fact" that AA men want their women to be fat. In my personal opinion, being obese is not the same as being "thick and voluptuous". The AA men that I encounter are not that shallow...sorry! So, I feel offended when one group is sterotyped...regardless of who is doing the stereotyping. Again, I think that the comment is ludicrous!

I don't think anyone said black men want fat women BUT they on average want shapely women, moreso than white men.

I have been thick, fat and now skinny at goal. I got the most play at "thick" My husband liked me better at 155-160 and I am 5'5 pear shaped. That was not my goal and I am currently 130-135 and a size 2. At this point I don't gives a shitz because I am happy and I have out my needs first. I was not willing to still be at risk for ANY disease because I wanted big hips and a big azz.

Everyone will make the choice that makes them happy though but I see wayyyy too many black women choosing to be thick for thier "man".

I agree with what you're saying. I think that the focus should be about health. However, I felt that it was implied (by several people) that black men in general are shallow & I didn't like it. So, I commented. On another note, congrats on the weight loss!

They're not shallow?

LOL

I will say that my man is.

He has ALWAYS made fun of flat butt chicks. He is very adamant about liking "thick" shapes.

We have beem married 19 yrs and I have not been this weight in 18yrs. My rear needs some lifting and weight training will help but I no longer feel the need to conform to a certain look to please someone else. I think it comes with me turning 40 soon and I am at that age of "self contentment".

Men are shallow...most men at least...and I don't know where y'all are at but out here in Cali "thick" is not in. AA men here like slim/athletic healthy looking women. And anyway, you should be doing this for health primarily and esthetics secondary and if he is your husband and he loves you he will love you even more for making a healthy decision and if not well that's a whole other issue.

I agree Chichi! If you are going to say that all men are shallow, that's fine. I just don't think that AA men are the only ones. Idk...I am surrounded by black men with substance (uncles, cousins, significant other, etc). So, I don't like the stereotyping...just my two scents.

ok...IJS....if you are overly concerned about how a man (who cares of race) feels about your body, you need to have more confidence in yourself, and maybe see someone if you need to....it really doesn't matter who says what to whom....in the end you have to feel good about you....this surgery is about health, not beauty....yeah once you lose the weight you will fit more of the standard "oh she looks so good, real good" comment most people say when someone loses alot a weight, but this is about health....any I think any man (any good man) will respect a woman who is taking care of herself, then wondering how big her butt is....

And if a person is really concerned about booty and bustiness, there are garments to help ya out....

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
