Has Anyone Cheated On Their Post-Op Diet?

Recommended Posts

what flavor puddings are you all eatting and is it easy to find sugar free/fat free? If so, where can you find it?

Check at you grocery store for the boxed pudding. I have been able to find all kinds of flavors that are SF/FF! Good luck!

Just curious and be honest if anyone has cheated on their post-op diet and what the consequences were? I feel so hungry and have honestly been contemplating putting something in the food processor and having a few bites of a mushie.

I am not sure I cheated per say...but I was sleeved on November 10th....I was always use to eating spicy food and my mouth was missing flavor big time. I wasn't hungry for food just flavor.

So I cheated by buying low fat catalina dressing. If you know anything about catalina dressing it has some very nice spices in it. Once a day i squeezed a little onto my finger just to get the taste of it and it was like all i needed. I told my dr and he laughed and said that is minor considering what some do.

I am not telling you to cheat because I think we shouldn't but you might want to create some ideas of ways you can get what you are missing...and consult your dietician and see if they agree.

You can mix some Protein Drink powder into your FF/SF instant pudding mix too to boost the Protein and change the flavor too if you want. Mix it in the milk then follow directions for the pudding. I found if you let it set for a while the texture is better. If you are still on liquids you might want to add just a little extra milk so its not too thick.

I am three days post op and wouldn't dare cheat because I'd be too afraid of something bad happening to me. They moved me to full liquids yesterday but I'm taking it easy and do best with hot tea and hot chicken broth.< /p>

Hi, I had my sleeve surgery on 11/29 and I haven't stuck to the original schedule the dietician gave me. I was on Protein shakes & liquids for 2 weeks pre-op and then on Clear Liquids in the hospital. Once at home the scheduled diet was 2 weeks on a liquid diet and then pureed foods for a week then soft for a week, then regular. I was so sick of the liquid diet that I was about to cheat majorly. Luckily I was able to hold out until my follow up with my surgeon 7 days after I left the hospital. He asked what diet I was on and I shared how tired I was of liquids. He said, I could go ahead and progress to the next stage as long as I took it slow and listened to my body.

So I would recommend chatting with your surgeon or dietician, everyone's different and it depends on how you're recuperating. I didn't realize that cheating could cause leaks as I read on this thread - that definitely has me re-thinking my meals! You definitely need to pay attention to your body. I was never good about knowing when I was full so it's kind of a foreign concept to me but once I start burping and feeling gassy, I know that I pushed too much and need to scale back.

Good luck and hang in there, we won't have to eat like this forever! :P

Sleeved 11/29 by Dr. Wallace, Suburban Surgical Care in IL

Before shakes weighed 310, height 5'2

Day of Surgery weighed 294

as of 12/12 weighed 275

My surgeon says two weeks liquids. You can have Popsicles and Jello. I hate Jello so that was off the table. No pudding no cream of wheat I in fact would kill for some of these. I am think I am craving texture more then anything. I will admit that I had 1/4 teasspoon of mashed potatos last night. No proplems but to be honest I let it dissolve in my mouth then had to have Water to get it off my tongue. I am afraid of complications so now I will wait til tomorrow to have yogurt the first thing I am allowed on mushes.

God forgive me, I must confess...I ate 2 Oz of Gerber chicken noodle Soup stage 2...add salt. It was more solid and 2 Oz filled me up. I was satisfied and very low carbs 25 calories. Man oh man...it was like a fillet mignon! Too much liquids are making me so nauseous. I can't drink anymore😣😥 I keep burping it up and comes up in my throat. The baby food was runny and mushy but a bit of heaviness that I couldn't get with Water. sugar free foods make me so nauseous. I am now 239. Had surgery 12/29. I was 250. So 11 pounds in 3 days that's awesome.

My only cheat has been coffee everyday since sleeve +1 day. I’ve had a small mug each day and one day I had an espresso. There hasn’t been any real consequences except the one day I didn’t have anything but coffee and went out on a 40 minute walk / errand. I was pretty exhausted and felt bad and spent after that. Now I know to have Water and a Protein Shake too before doing anything strenuous.

Phase one... Yogurt and a few bites of scrambled eggs. Phase two... I tore off a few pieces of a piece of a baked chicken wing and whatever I didn't finish, my sister did. Hey at least I'm being honest. Doesn't mean I encourage it but the stuff I could eat, I couldn't stand eating to the point I wasn't eating no matter how much anyone told me to eat.

Interesting thing is that it stayed down. I ate what I knew I could handle. I was on the lower side of the 200s then. Probably around 144 today. Guess I'll see later on this morning.

I know I didn't make the best of choices but broth, popsicles and Jello got gross to me real quick.

I let a Sun Chip disolve in my mouth, lol. I was desperate for something other than Protein Drinks and Soup.

So yeah, about cheating while recuperating...I think I will not do again. Oh my gosh! Let me share what I been going through. So I am only on day 7 post op. Gas and pain under left rib is horrible...every time I drink anything I have to make myself burp as its going down. Last night I made my son his favorite meal for his birthday, I thought since I am on solid liquids now I could put a bit in blender and eat it. NEVER AGAIN!

See folks, doctors give us specific guidelines for a reason. To go around this rules, there is a consequence to pay. I realized this last night. I will not do this again because the outcome of me eating what not supposed to and the harm I could have done to myself, is not worth the risk of leakage and getting an infection. So I will stick to the nasty Protein Shakes and Water. I made a choice to get healthy by getting this surgery and I promised to commit to the rules. I am in pain because of breaking the rules. 😣😣😣

My doctor told a story about a year after my surgery. He had never lost a patient during surgery and the first person to pass was a female who decided to eat a piece of chicken during her liquid phase. Literally only a few days out of surgery. The outcome was death. Not trying to say this to scare anyone, but there is a reason we MUST do liquids only. There are many stitches inside of us that can be torn from food. And it happened to this female. She bled internally. It’s not worth it! If you must have something, please keep it simple like mash potatoes! Prayers for all!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
