Surgery Scheduled: December 1!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone~ I finally had the nerve to start posting regularly, and tell my story. I'm 55 years old and having VSG on 12/1/10 at Scripps, and my doctor is Dr. Bhoyrul in La Jolla, CA. He seems very competent, and I'm getting excited to start my new life. The decision to have WLS was made on 10/11/10, and I thought I wanted the Lap Band. My doctor and the psychologist I had to see for insurance reasons both said my personality type would do better with gastric bypass. (Apparently, I am 'unstructured,' whatever that means.) After reading everything I could find on RnY, Fobi Pouch, VSG, etc., I decided the VSG is best for me. My insurance approved the surgery on 11/17, surgery scheduled for 12/1/10, and I started the liver shrinking diet today. A couple weeks ago I weighed 342, today 338. I'm hoping to lose quite a bit the next two weeks on the Lovely Liver Diet. Evidently, if I were a goose, I'd be a prime specimen - nice and fat with a huge liver!

Congrats and welcome!

I am being sleeved December 20th~ I am always so happy when I hear that someone has decided NOT to get a band. Mine has been nothing but a pain (literally). Good luck with your surgery! It will be here before you know it.

Shrink that liver! Me too! Getting sleeved on December 6. I had my preop appointment today. I only have two days of liquids prior to surgery but was required to lose 10% of excess weight before they would even give me a surgery date. Now I just have to maintain the loss. I have read about a lot of people who gained a lot of weight before surgery eating their "final feasts" but it is I wanted to lose weight. From what my Dr tells me I will have a better chance of having an uneventful surgery if I lose before the big day. I have been really working on changing bad habits now, and not waiting for after the surgery to change the way I eat.

Good luck to you! December is right around the corner!

I am having my surgery 12/1/10 also. I start my pre op diet on 11/28. I was originally going to the seminar to get the band. My surgeon discussed the pro and cons of each of the surgeries. Once I saw the sleeve, I knew that was what I wanted. I researched everything I could find on vsg. So glad that I didn't get the band.

My husband thinks I am insane. I have started buying things to take with me to the hospital. I have also bought a few different types of shakes that I like now. Hoping to still like after surgery. Hate the Vitamins. I feel like a little kid getting ready for Xmas morning.

My doc wants me on the liver shrinking liquids for 2 weeks. It's been 2 days, and I am feeling really weak already! But somehow I'll get through it - I know I won't starve to death. Twelve more days - seems like a long way away, but I'm getting excited! Lisabug, you and I will be having ours the same day - I'll be thinking of you!

I'm on the fourth day of my liver shrinking diet, and I feel much better now. I think I just had to get used to it. Would love to eat something, of course, but it's not worth it. Ten more days, Lisabug!

My surgery is scheduled Tues, Nov 30th. I started my liquid diet on Monday - almost a week ago. My husband and mom can't believe I'm on liquids during Thanksgiving! But after doing this for the past week, I should be good during the holiday. The first 3 days were the worst, but I feel like I'm on auto-pilot now with liquids, trying to get it all in. I've lost 5 lbs this past week already (I know, it's just Water weight) and should feel even better the day of surgery. I just hope my liver shrinks as best as possible - I have a long way to go!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
