Protein bars?

Recommended Posts

OMGOSH! I can't wait to switch over to the premeire bars (hope they are good). I'm drinking the shakes (which I used to love) and I'm super tired of them, I'm to the point of almost gaging everytime :) ...I have 1 more week on mushies BLAH!

I have always consumed either Pure Protein (20 grams of protein) or the Premier Protein Bars (30 grams of protein) but I watch the calories on the latter bar. They are close to 300 calories so those are more like a meal and it took me awhile to be able to actually eat the whole thing. I was too full!

The Pure Protein are under 200 calories and I use them to boost my protein intake if I haven't had enough for the day or I need something quick and/or portable.

For years I was a solid Protein shake person and for the life of me, post-op, I am gagging on these shakes now. They just taste so gross to me so I stick with the bars (see my other post).

Hi all. Can you tell me how far out you were when you started eating Protein bars? I'm a month out today, and having a heck of a time getting all my Protein in. On my pre-op diet, I lived on Protein shakes and bars, but I'm so sick of the shakes, I don't think I can stomach another one and would like to know when I can try the bars. I can call my doctor and ask, just wanted to get your input.

Thanks!!!!!

You'll get more protein in by eating things like eggs, tuna, cheese, fish, chicken, etc. than you will by eating Protein Bars. For the calories and carbs in them compared to the protein in them, they're just not worth it to me during the losing stage.

That's just my opinion though.

I agree with Goodlife. I only use the bars when I am stuck or really not feeling like a cooked meal but I do consume most of my Protein from regular foods and not shakes/bars. I started the bars about a month out.

I take a Protein bar to work every day, because I work 12 hour shifts, and I really need something in the afternoon or I feel like crap. I like the Pure Protein Bars and most of the Atkins ones, too. I don't have the problem with sugar alcohols giving me gas or diarrhea, though (thankfully!).

I've never tried any other kind because I do use the Atkins theory of net carbs, although sometimes I wonder if a sugar alcohol is really that much different from sugar. Especially the one that tastes good -- Maltitol. I have heard it actually has nearly the same impact on blood sugar as real sugar does, which makes it pointless.

You're right... but right now I'm so sick of eggs and cheese. I can't take it anymore :) ...I just need a change BIG TIME. It's quite depressing for me at this point:svengo:.

Just wanted to update on my search - Zone bars sit well with me; they are bit higher in carbs than other bars, however. A good bar I found that has a decent nutrition profile (180 cals, 20 g protein) and tastes good is Myoplex Lite chocolate Peanut Butter.< /p>

I have been replacing 1-2 meals with Protein Shakes as the RN suggested while I waited for my appeal, and so I bought a box of the pure Protein bars from costco. They taste pretty good. I read the warning on the back about alcohol sugars and didn't think anything of it. About 20 minutes after I ate it the first time, I got lightheaded, felt extremely nauseous and started shaking. I dismissed my class early and thought I was going to pass out. I thought I might be getting sick. After about 30 minutes it passed. I didn't connect it to the protein bars until the next day when it happened again. It was just like the low blood sugar attacks I would get in high school when I would go without eating all day. So I did some research. It turns out that even though our body can't process the alcohol sugars, some peoples bodies are still fooled and their pancreas dumps insulin to process sugar that isn't there, so the blood sugar drops rapidly. No more protein bars for me.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
