Anyone have horrible headaches post-op?

Recommended Posts

I am 2 days out on my sleeve, and am seeming to keep a headache at all times- is that normal, or something I should call the Dr about?

You should at least run it by the doctor. A lot of people get post anesthesia headaches and also if your used to having coffee and soda's it could be from the lack of caffeine. I just took some tylenol for mine the first couple of days.

I don't know what exactly you mean by "horrible," if it's literally the worst headache you've ever had and, in particular, if you are feeling weird (vision problems, weird sensations or weakness), you need to go to the ER because there's a small chance of you having a blood clot after the surgery, and it can travel to the brain, among other things.

If it feels pretty manageable, it's probably some sort of sugar withdrawal or a reaction to anesthesia.

I had them for a few weeks, postop. Dr. said that it was due to going into a state of ketosis. Burning fat for energy, rather than carbs and sugar. But I agree, you should talk to your Dr.

Thanks guys for the advice, it seems to be better today, I think it may be from lack of intake- I am having a hard time getting the Protein and fluids down.

I had quite a few headaches the first week or so after surgery. They weren't super-painful, but definitely annoying. I was a <big> caffeine drinker before the surgery and wondered if it was just withdraw - although I hadn't had any the entire week before surgery so I would assume that's not the problem.

In any event, after about a week they went away. Hope that's your experience as well!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
