Going back to work and feeling nervous

Recommended Posts

I have been off work for a month since surgery. Tomorrow is my first day back and I am feeling very nervous. It takes me all day to get my Water and Protein intake. I am concerned that I won't have enough time at work to get in what I need to. I am also concerned about what to pack for my day for food. I have been eating a lot of cooked food but I am not always going to be able to reheat so that might not be a great option. I spend a lot of my job in the car visiting families. I don't want to eat poorly because I'm on the go which was a habit I fell into before. I am hoping that by packing my day of food it goes better than it used to. Anyway, just venting.

Hi there

Just wanted to wish you good luck!

I'd take small things that you can snack on thru the day, maybe if you've been eating hot stuff you could get a food warmer (flask) which would keep stuff warm? Soup or a stew would work if you can eat them.

I saw somewhere on the web the idea of bento boxes - which the japanese use, with small compartments for each food group.

At the moment I am into cottage cheese which I spice up with chilli, lime zest and juice and coriander - I hate plain cottage cheese!! Also a touch of hoisin sauce is good too.

Hope it goes well!

It's a good idea to plan out your food for the day. Try to take things that will be easy to eat on-the-go, at least for the first couple days. Make sure you take your Water everywhere you go (if you can). I really had a hard time getting in my Water at work, and I'm still not doing as well on work days as I do when I'm home. I think what's important is to have a plan going into the work day, so you don't feel stressed out about eating, and having the right foods. I do much better when I plan the night before, get everything made and portioned out into my tiny little bowls, etc. It keeps me from worrying and stressing out early in the morning.

Do you like string cheese? It's something I've been eating at work for a snack, and it has pretty good Protein. I also have some hard-boiled eggs on hand to take for a snack as well. I am really pretty boring, and I eat a lot of tuna salad, chicken breast, lunchmeat, cottage cheese, Greek or Carbmaster yogurt, and cheeses. I don't get a lot of variety, but I make sure to get my Protein in. Then I usually have different meals at home, with a little more variety (sometimes. I still eat lots of tuna, even at home).

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
