Gas Pains. . . Ouchies

Recommended Posts

I have been getting gas pains for a while since being banded. I am pretty sure all the gas from surgery is gone, haha. But yeah I still get gas pains in my shoulder. Today they hurt so bad, I don't want to move. Anybody have any ideas on what is causing it. Or maybe something that will help me get rid of the pain?

Try walking. It seemed to be the ONLY thing that helped my gas pains. Some recommend gas-x.

If you are still having these gas pains 8-10 weeks post op, you may want to mention it to your surgeon - just to be on the safe side.

I'm almost 9 months out and still get gas pain in my left shoulder......Dr. doesn't know whats causing, but doesn't seem alarmed. I really only notice it when I eat something bad (like Sunday night I had a piece of cheesecake and then had pain). Rotating my arm over and over helps, rubbing it helps and walking also helps.........gas x doesn't do a thing for me!

Dena, another thing I remember reading about that helped other bandsters is applying a heating pad to the aching shoulder.

Gosh, I hate hearing that you are still suffering the crazy shoulder pains this far out.

I was banded April 25. and I have shoulder pain at least once a week. I didnt mention to Dr. at first fill. He would just question me on what I have been eating. So I am HOPING that its just from what I m eating????

I still get the shoulder pain. If I lay on my left side for about 10 minutes the gas comes out. Most of the time anyways. I hope thats not to much info but it really does work for me. I know it is very painfull. Mine seems to get bad when I am driving for some reason. Good luck to you.

Unfortunately, I have heard that eating improperly or "bad" stuff can cause a shoulder pain flare-up. Your diapram(sp) gets irritated and it causes referred pain that you feel in your shoulder.

That post-op shoulder pain was the worst part of the whole thing for me!!

Hope things improve for you! I was a big GAS X and heating pad gal and it helped alot!

Hi Everyone --

I had my procedure 6/9/06 --so I'm barely a week out. I have gas pains so bad in my left should it hurts to breathe:faint: . It's trying to move up into my neck area so I'm praying it's trying to leave. I've done it all ...the gas x, the arm exercises, walking etc. Not much seems to be helping. I had a lot of gas in the abdominal area as well but most of that seems to have subsided.

For thos of you that had this experience post op, how long did it take for it to leave your body? I need to see a light at the end of the tunnel :help: .

The only thing that worked for me and still works is laying on my shoulder that hurts. It is a little painful at first but it makes the gas come out. Hope thats not to much info but that is what works for me. I have even pulled my car over when I was in bad pain and laid on my left side for about 10 minutes. Good luck to you and it will get better.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I've tried everything that you all have suggested. Some things offer a little relief. I guess for me, it will take --

time, time, time:drum:

I was banded on May 31st and about 3 days after surgery the gas pain in my shoulder set in...it started on a Saturday...the pain was pretty bad for about 48 hours and then started gradually subsiding. It also felt like it was moving higher up my shoulder toward my neck as each day passed. By the next Tuesday morning I could still feel it in my shoulder and it hurt a little, but I was functional and could do pretty much anything. All in all the painful part lasted about 3-4 days straight and then it just kept fading away until it was gone and I didn't notice it anymore.

The gas-x had no effect on it. I didn't try a heating pad but I hear that works. Walking and rotating your arm helped me some, but mostly just laying flat on my back w/out a pillow relieved the pressure enough so I could sleep.

I hope this helps...hang in there!!

MiniMandy --

I know exactly how you felt. Last night I had a friend give me a massage and then my aunt gave me a deep tissue massage. That helped a bit. But laying flat on the heating pad gave a lot of relief. I woke up this morning with no pain. Now it's about noon and it's starting to spaz again. Only a few more hours until I get to leave work.

And the GasX has given me no relief as well.

Trying not to alarm you but you could be developing gallbladder problems? I know I had bad problems like that up in my shoulder, on my left side, and six months later I had to have my gallbladder removed. It wouldnt hurt to get it checked out. After I had it removed the gas pains in my shoulder were gone for good.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
