Wanting to have surgery in Monterrey or TX border.

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am starting my search for my WLS Doctor. I am definetly doing it in Mexico since I am self pay. I live in Tx so I am going to drive to save airfare money. Does anyone have any recommendations or for that matter horror stories for doctors in Monterrey or any other Mexican towns close to the TX border. I am leaning toward Juarez because my mom lives close to there and she is keeping my kids while I am gone but I will go somewhere else for a good Dr.

Dr. Alvarez is somewhere near Eagle's Pass....although I'm not sure where that is, I know that when I was considering him, I would have to fly into San Antonio.

I ultimately went with another doc who was a little cheaper and I was more comfy with, but I would have gone to him if the other doc didn't work out for some reason. He has a good reputation and good experience with the VSG. There is a lot about him on the OH forum.

I believe when I spoke with his office in June he was about $9500. Here is his site:

Dr. Guillermo Alvarez: Gastric Sleeve (VSG) & Lap-Band®

Good luck to you!

I was "sleeved" in Juarez by Dr. Rodriguez at Star Medica last month. He and his staff exceeded my expectations.

There are some other good choices but I don't think you can go wrong if you choose Dr. Rod.

I would LOVE to go to Dr. Alvarez but he is a little more than I am hoping to pay. Right now Dr. Rod is my 1st choice. He seems to have alot of people happy with him and he is reasonable priced. NC Redneck, how much was your total cost (if you don't mind sharing)? Although I am leaning towards Dr. Rod I would still like suggestions of other Doctors in that area so I can check all of them.

Was there a deposit? Did you pay the remaining money before surgery or when you got to the hospital/

I paid a $500 deposit and paid the balance when I arrived at the hospital with a cashiers check. The surgery is $150 cheaper in Tijuana vs. Juarez with Dr. Rod, but if you live in Texas Juarez is probably still the best option.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
