Really struggling - Please help!

Recommended Posts

I am Day 4 post op and I am really really struggling! I was on the morphine clicker when I was in hospital and felt fine, but have been in such huge amounts of pain since that I am beginning to lose it! My doctor prescribed me Capadex which are HUGE capsules that get stuck and hurt like hell, and last night I threw them up which hurt heaps too. I have tried emptying the capsules and putting them in all sorts of things; ice cream yoghurt etc but they taste so bad I am gagging before I even swallow. My mum got me some soluble Panadeine but its not very strong and isnt helping. Plus I have to swallow the nexium and my antidepressant - It just seems like I am swallowing pills every few hours....OWW! I also have these weird hiccuppy thing which are excruciating, really really bad. I just dont know what to do now, Im out of options and in sooo much pain...please help me.

Maybe you should ask your doctor to put you on liquid lortab. That's what I was on. I can not begin to tell you have moving around and walking helps also. But I do know that even that doesn't help with some pains. I actually had a massage about 4 or 5 days post op that only lasted 30 minutes but was sooooooo worth the 30 bucks I spent on it. Other then that I bought liquid tylenol for adults to help me get through. Hope this helps.

What was your doctor thinking? You need a liquid pain killer. Liquid valium works and relaxes your stomach and esophogas. My doctor also gave me liquid oxycodone. It wiped me out completely and I had to take benadryl chewables for the itching (if morphine doesn't make you itch then you're fine). Toradol is a lighter pain killer that goes under your tongue. I don't know what the doctor was thinking give you pills.

Swallowing pills 4 days out Is crazy I couldn't even swallow Water. Im only 11 days out so I remember those first couple of days very well. My Dr gave me liquid Tylenol Codene. It helped relax me me NOT drug me but relax my stomach muscles and help me get some liquids down.

Hang in there Call your Dr.

I agree with the others, call your dr and ask for some liquid pain meds. The over the counter ones come in liquid too.

Thank you for your suggestions. I live in Australia and it seems we dont have any of the things you guys have talked about. Get this - my doctor only gave me his office number which I assumed would give emergency details but didnt. i should have checked first. I could still call the hospital I guess?

What a mess, now Im terrified I am going to get a leak with these pills. Have walked around plenty which has helped a little with the gassy gurgling pain. I took some morphine tablets my mum had left over from surgery and vomited them straight up so no go! Do hot packs help?

You need to contact your Dr..... mine gave me his mobile number in case of emergency. Or failing that, go to the A&E.

I thought we couldn't touch any form of time release capsule for quite a while after the op....and as for Nexium, I'm on it, and I used to crush it days 1-6, but it does taste very bitter no matter what you put it in, so at my post op check up he said just cut it i nhalf and swallow it, and they've gone down ok.

Ask for soluble or liquid forms of things to help get you thru this....I really feel for you as being sick after the surgery really isn't nice at all.

Good luck - do let us know how you get on.

Kathy

Omgoodness, I really hope u feel better soon. Do you have a primary care doctor you see? Maybe you could see him and get him to change your meds to liquid. If you have a pharmacy that filled your pills then they will have the liqid form too, if they don't have it in stock they can order it for next day delivery. Doc might can even give you Phenergan liquid to take with your meds so you don't feel sick. If pharmacy says the can't or won't fill the liquid then go to a different one. If they won't then try and order online. You will need to talk with your doctor who wrote the RX to see if they will approve the fax the online company will send them(they have to do this because of narcotics) and see if they will rush it to you. Be very carefull doing this. They might even ship it to the doctors office. If so make sure you let the office know that's where its comeing so you get it on time. I don't know if this is going to help you but good luck!

Thanks for reaching out... so sorry your in so much pain and distress. I've been there and know how it feels. To gain composure and get a bit calmer, do some immediate deep breathing while raising your arms up above your head. You need to relieve yourself of fear and anxiety. If your surgeon is inexcessable, formulate your message clearly, (what you feel and what you need--ALL your concerns) and leave a message w/date and time. Also, if you have a regular doctor (Primary Care Physician 'PCP'), contact him or her and let them know you need immediate help, ie. liquid precriptions..otherwise go to the ER and be sure to give them your surgeons information and bring some data/info on the surgery you just had, if necessary print info on the sleeve surgery out of your computer and make sure the staff knows what's going on. Let us know please how you make out.

Hey guys!

Just a quick note to let you know I think I am on the downhill. I decided to not take anymore painkillers, I am sure the pain they cause are most of the problem. Last night was rough but I feel better today. I cant say I dont regret the surgery - pain is difficult to deal with when you chose to have it but I am trying not to think about it and take each day at a time.

Thank you so much for your advice, I have sent my mum (a doctor in occupational health so not that informed on painkillers) to the pharmacist twice and they have all said they do not have strong liquid painkillers. Isnt that crazy? I managed to get in about 100 mls of Sustagen this morning, and since I have stopped the capsules I am able to get in more Water etc. I still have to take a Nexium and an anti depressant which I am not looking forward to. The last pill I cut in half got stuck and I threw it up. I pray that the worst is over......

At this point, I'd urge you to go to your emergency department so they can give you some IV pain meds and rehydrate you (you're probably dehydrated at this point). You may even need some electrolyte replacement as well. They will contact your surgeon who will be forced to deal with the situation and get it under control.

Okay, sounds good. I didn't take much pain killer at the point you are at either. But if you can't get liquids down at all, yeah, you gotta go back before you get worse. Just try to sip your way through it. Warm liquids may work better, I drank a lot of Decaf hot tea. I just drank it 'warm'. Also some like warm Jello. Real chicken broth worked very very well for me and it is very natural.

DAY 6!!

Im am feeling so much better. Alot of what I was going through was panic I think. Its hard to imagine you will feel better when you are in so much pain.

In hindsight I really shouldnt have let it get that bad. I should have gone to ER and let them help me. Im not sure why I didnt? I think maybe I thought that if my doctor thought I was fine then I must have been being a baby. How silly. I paid that man good money and I do not feel like he even cared how I was that day, he would have sent me home regardless. I should have asked more questions, I should have demanded more. There is nothing I can do now but I will never let myself be in that much pain again.

On a more positive note, I feel great! Well actually I dont feel 'great' but comparatively I feel freeking amazing! I have settled into my routines of walking and sipping and I am well on my way. I still get uncomfortable and the big incision still hurts and the gas gurgling is awful, but every day I wake up I get better.

I am so glad I found you people. I am sure this will not be the last time I ask for help....but I am finally feeling pretty positive about this. So yeah, thanks ;-)

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
