July 2006 Band Crew

Recommended Posts

I started Clear Liquids yesterday - the first part of the day was fine and I was so excited and proud of how strong I was. Then 4pm hit and I was done for the day!

My comprehention was slow and I felt horrible. I woke up this morning with a severe headache and nausea. I took some Tylenol and am drinking a venti Starbucks iced tea and am now feeling much better. I guess the first 2 days of clear liquid detox are the worst.

I wish my dr. would let me have carnation instant Breakfast. Any reason we cannot have steamed green eveggies, like green Beans or asparagus? I woudl think those woudl be better than diluted fruit juice.< /p>

I am being banded by Dr. Ortiz on 7/21. I have to start my liquid diet next week. I ordered FIT365 (protein powder), per my doc's instructions. Anyone else use FIT365? Any suggestions on how to make it somewhat tastey?

Also, I am 202 lbs., 5'3", what if I am not able to get down to 191 by my surgery date? What if I can only lose 5lbs.? Has anyone not been able to lose the 10% required? Were you turned away or did it make you higher risk at surgery?

Would appreciate any info.

Thanks,

mferra

MFerra - I was not told to loose 10% first, and I have a LOT more to loose than you...hmmm I guess different doctors have different methods.

I am on clear liquids for 7 days, and signed an agreement to excersise for 30 minutes a day. Maybe working out will help you to loose more before your procedure.

Good luck to you!!

Thanks BGP! The pre-op diet is 3-4 shakes as Meal Replacements and two salads with balsamic vinegar per day for 7 days. I have been walking 2 miles 2-3x week, but I know that I need to up that a little a lay off the sugar. I tend to eat more when I am excited or nervous (I am nervous about the surgery). Needless to say, next week will be a trying one with the pre-op diet but I know I can and will have to do it.

BGP, I also see that your surgery is coming up. Hope everything goes well and I look forward to seeing your post-op posts on your progress!

Thanks again.

Hello all...

Just an update: I'm surprised at how well I feel. I have no pain whatsoever. I feel uncomfortable where the band it, but that's to be expected as I'm getting used to feeling something foreign in my insides. My incision areas are great, and I don't even hurt in the port area (yet?). I can get up and out of bed or from a chair just fine on my own. I'm just trying to get used to feeling full. I have had 1/2 to 3/4 cup slim fast at a time. It tastes really good going down after being on clear liquids for five days. The fullness kicks in about 15 minutes after I drink it, so I have to be careful not to overdo it.

My doctor said I can start introducing foods like Cream of Wheat and SF pudding, etc. whenever I feel I'm ready. I don't want to rush it, so I'll wait another week or so. As far as exercise goes, I have bilateral degenerative osteoarthritis in both of my knees, so I have a recumbant exercise bike to ride instead of going for walks. My knees couldn't handle the walking. I need a new knee, eventually.

I've discovered I have a lot of support from family and friends. I knew I would, but it just seems like a lot more than I expected, which is nice.

I am so relieved that this isn't as bad as I imagined it would be. I know that very soon I will be saying it's the best thing I ever did for myself.

I don't know how I missed this thread. I was wondering why there was no july bansters yet? (I started another one opps lol ) I have been a little out of the loop because I had Gall bladder surgery on the 30th..But anyways congrats to all that are banded, keep us posted and let us know what we are in for... I am so excited that my day is soon to be here. I'v got 19 days to go... hehe...

Time to love PLEEESSSSWEEEE add my name to the list (I kindof feel left out) lol

Hippmom

You can do this you are doing what is best for you. This is a very scary road but in the end it will be a very rewarding one. I just had a lap surgery on the 30th and two days later I made a 6 hr rd trip (3 hrs one way) to see family for the fourth. I quit taking pain meds on day two of my surgery. I was not in PAIN it was more like I had done a killer workout and I was sore. You can do this.. Don't back out now we are here with you all facing the same fears... (((((hugs))))) it will be OK

I am also getting banded on the 25th with Dr. Ortiz in TJ---how about you? I hope you are too!!! Good luck to us both!!! 16 days and counting!!!

biggirlpantiez,

i got headaches too when i made my attempt on a pre opt diet. My doctor didn't tell me what i could eat or not eat he just told me to lose 5lbs.

I remember those headaches though. You just need to remember that everytime you get one of those headaches its because you are getting all the bad stuff out of your body. Body is doing what it can to make you give it what it wants. Usually surgar. So stay tough. the headaches will go away soon. then it will be easier from then on.

i don't know if your doctor allows it but my doctor only allowed tylenol pre opt so that helped when it was bad.

but you're doing great! the headaches makes it known that you are working hard and it is working.

KEEP IT UP!

Well once again, thanks to you all for your daily updates, I love reading your posts. The one thing I am not scared about is having surgery, I've had over 15 in my lifetime of 35 years LOL. I'm just scared of the affect the anestetics (SP)? have on me.

BGP... lol you crack me up!! I'm so glad I've got to know you, I can't imagine a day on LBT with out cha! lol

For those of you on the liquid diets.. my love is sent out to you. I'm so glad that I didn't have to do that. I am thinking that maybe I will regret this later though...My thought was maybe some people have a better mind frame about not eating food because they started a pre-op diet.. and I'll be going cold turkey!! TO YOU RECENTLY BANDED.. do you think this might be true?

July 5, Donna, Daniella and Eric's Mom.... I see that July5 said that she could be down 20 pounds within 2 weeks. That is amazing.. Did your Dr's tell you the same thing. Also, do you think this is all Water weight? If it is.. It usually comes back on.. but since you're banded.. do you think that this would still be true? I'm hoping it doesn't come back.. but my guess is that maybe a few pounds would, What's your thought on this? By no means am I trying to rain on anyones parade.. it's been a burning question for me and I figure I'd ask in a thread that I feel most comfortable with. Thank you, in advance, for all your answers.

TIme to love me -

My surgeon didn't say anything about losing 20 lbs in 2 weeks, but it is probably possible, and you are probably right about it being mostly Water weight. All I know is that since Monday when I went for medical clearance from my Primary Care Dr I weighed 245. This morning I weighed 241 so already that is 4 lbs lost. I am not hungry at all - just a little lightheaded because of the lack of nutrients.

I feel really good for just having surgery on Wednesday and hope that the scale continues going downward. ALthough I was told that any weight loss that occurs during this time is a bonus because right now our bodies are supposed to be healing and we're not supposed to be losing weight.

If you have any other questions please let me know and I will try my best to answer them.

So happy I am in bandland!

Thanks Danielle,

4 pound is 4 pounds, just as you said. I'm very happy for you, and just think.. it's just a start to many more - pounds. Thanks for all the info., I'm going to see my surgeon on Tues. and I'll have a small list of questions to ask him. You and are are around the same weight.. Do you mind if I ask your height? I'm 5'5 and a half.. LOL I always have to throw that in.

LOL I am about 5'7 and I have been told I have a small frame. Whatever. I'm a small girl trapped in a big girl's body!!

I'm happy for me too!! LOL

I wish I could lose 4 lbs every week until I am at goal. How awesome would that be? Too bad its very unlikely to happen!! LOL

ANy other questions? I have been researching the band since 2002 so I know a thing or two about this procedure.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
