My Post-Op Plan...whew!

Recommended Posts

I think it's one of the more strict plans out there!

I was looking over the guidelines sheet they gave me.

Here's what it says.

Days 1-4: Clear liquids no sugar added

Days 5-7: Begin adding Protein supplement drinks

Day 10-12: Add thicker (full) liquids, V8 juice, thin cream Soups, yogurt, pudding (low fat and no sugar added)

Day 21: Hi Protein smoothies, applesauce, baby food (no sweeteners added), bananas

Day 28 (4 weeks): Oatmeat consistency, cottage cheese, cream of wheat, continue taking protein supplement

**IF YOU'RE NOT HUNGRY DON'T EAT**

Day 35 (5 weeks): Add cooked vegetables, canned fruits, small amount baked potato. Try adding low-fat cheese

Day 42 (6 weeks): Add poached or soft egg, mushy red or white Beans (very small amount), cracker/melba toast, fresh fruit, protein and low-fat granola bars

Day 56 (8 weeks): You'll be ready to try scrambled eggs, rice, Cereal, and whole wheat Pasta in small amounts *Always eat protein first

8 Weeks After: Baked fish, tuna, toasted bread, and cooked vegetables. Add Calcium supplement. Once you have tolerated baked fish, crab, and tuna, (maybe even ground turkey), you will be able to advance to baked chicken and salads

6 Months and After: No pork, ham, or beef until 6 months post-op.

wow! According to that guideline, I was a very very bad girl! I would never have made it : (

I think the perfect word there tho is "guideline", not law. LOL

you are a real trooper! good for you!

in the end, it will be worth it. no pain, no gain - and this is the perfect example! : )

but then I have always been a rebel and rules are made to be broken. lol

my guidelines were much easier.......i was allowed soft food like eggs, meatloaf, etc at 3 weeks.

I really need to remember to make meatloaf! I just dump a bunch of salsa into the meat, mix it up and throw it in the oven. It is really nummy and would last a week! :tongue_smilie:

Approximately how much salsa for x pounds of meat? I'm always looking for new ways to make the most of my Protein. Thanks!

I am sorry mini ~ I don't have an exact measurement, I just dump it in. I would guess maybe a cup for every pound of meat? I stir it and smell it, and when it passes those two tests, it goes into the oven : ) Most of the time I made a mound on a rack on a baking sheet. If I am in a hurry to get it done, then I might make small loaves, about a handful of meat per loaf. It does cook faster.

I don't eat spicy food so I don't overdo it. It is very tasty tho!

My surgeon is even more strict, I think.

1st week post-op was just Water, broth and diet Jello. I went to see him today (9 days after surgery) thinking that, yipee, I might be permitted some yogury or cottage cheese or creamy Soups. But no. Not for me yet.

At this point I may only add Protein drinks to my list. For another 3 weeks!

And then, when I hit one month post-op, I am then allowed to add cottage cheese, ricotta cheese and yogurt. Nothing else.

At 6 weeks I can add the following: string cheese, refried Beans, Soup (lentil, split pea, black bean, miso or egg drop, and tofu.

And then, at week 7, I can add chicken turkey, fish and eggs.

And all during this time, no caffeinated coffee. *sigh*

On the upside, I've lost 19 pounds in 9 days!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
