Why does my stomach react to sweet things?

Recommended Posts

I'm grateful for the "mini-dumping" symptoms that I get when I overindulge in ice cream. As long as I keep it to 1/4 cup or less, I'm fine..but if I go over that, I feel miserable. The shakes, the sudden fatigue, nausea...miserable. Like others, it only happens on ultra sweet things, like Ice cream, frosting, brown sugar.

P.S. I'm down 55# since surgeryon Dec 15. I'm happy with that since I haven't been able to exercise at all due to my knee injury.

Wow I had no clue about alcohol. My doctor didn't mention alcohol at all. Are we supposed to avoid it?

I am not a regular drinking and only drink a few times a year but when I drink, lol, well, I DRINK! :tongue_smilie:

I assume that is not something I can do anymore?

What about 1 mixed drink. Would that be OK? I only do mixed drinks.

You can have mixed drinks when you are healed. Just expect to feel it a lot quicker.

Texas T,

I've had the same thing occasionally, but not every time...sometimes I can eat a little something sweet and it does not bother me. Other times I feel "bad" afterwards...hard to describe, I think it's the sugar "high" then the "low". A couple of times it was "dumping" but that was very rare.

Anyway, since I'm not eating sweets very often, it is a rare event and does not worry me.

I do have a lot of gurgling though, no matter what I eat.

I'm in the boat with Oregandaisy...milk products give me the most bathroom issues (1/3 of a small blizzard and I'm in trouble). I have a banana every morning for Breakfast and try to down some diced peaches or applesauce at a snack time to keep me regular...so those sweet items have been okay...

The highest sugar I've tried was the top portion of a homemade cupcake with a thick layer of buttercream frosting and I ate if FAST while cleaning up a 50th birthday party...it was amazingly good but I do not recall any side effects...

Maybe there's some lactose intolerance mixed in there too?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
