Pouch Stretching and Acid Reflux?

Recommended Posts

Hi Yall

I wanted to ask the experts, I am pre-surgery, but I am wondering.

I asked the doc in the consult about the 'pouch' stretching like

my gastric bypass friend says hers did and he told me 'it does not stretch'

Is this true? Will I find myself 5 or 6 or 7 years out and find I can eat

as much food as I do now?(or almost).

Also, I have acid reflux VERY bad with the band that is currently in.

What has been the word with the sleeve and reflux?

At least with the band I can get rid of it and get my reflux under control,

but since this is permanent..

Thanks in advance for any thoughts,

Lisa

I really don't know about the "pouch" stretching, we sleevers really don't have a "pouch" just one straight thingy. . from what i understand it's really muscular so it doesn't stretch like that. . .correct me if i'm wrong of course. . .my reflux has totally disappeared since the surgery, never have had one episode since. . . really like that! Good luck with your surgery! :)

My reflux was extreme with my band, so I removed the band, then had the sleeve put on 2 years later...NO RELFUX! I can sleep without junk coming up my throat--it is sooooo nice, :).

I agree that the sleeve has very little stretching, and very little ability to stretch--I know serveral people (most in my family) who have done gastric and the weight gain is one reason I went with the sleeve this time...it just made more sense to keep the digestive track intact as much as possible.

Thanks Thinoneday!

Thats what the doc told me was that 'it doesnt stretch' and when I talked to his receptionist a couple of weeks ago, she told me that the vertically shaped pouches dont stretch either, she said she had her pouch from her gastric bypass redone to a vertical pouch.

But, I was searching this morning on the 'net' and one of the bariatric sites listed pouch stretching as a 'disavantage' to the VSG.

Just trying to see what I can see.

Thanks Bored!

I am glad to hear that about the reflux, I think I would rather die

from being fat than from esophogheal(sp?) Cancer!

I cant wait! I have a scope scheduled next week, Anthem BCBS needs to be show 'medical necessity', so the doc scheduled a scope.

He wants to take the band out, let my stomach heal, then do the

Sleeve. I am SO excited from talking and listening to you guys.

My step is lighter and I can already feel the depression lifting with the hope of losing all of this fat and maybe going swimming later this summer and not be TOTALLY embarassed.

Thank you,

Lisa

a) We don't have a pouch. We have a normal, but very small, stomach. :)

:) The RNY pouch is made from the stretchiest part of the stomach and WILL stretch. The VSG sleeve (normal stomach) consists of the most muscular, least stretchy part.... the stretchy part is gone. It's like shoe leather in that it has some give, but doesn't stretch like a balloon. Whatever bariatric site listed "pouch stretching" as a disadvantage to VSG, sounds like they're woefully uninformed!

Agree with everyone else about the stomach tissue stretching. But, I'm 10 months out and I can eat a lot more than I could at 3-4 months post-op which is completely normal. It's not really stretched, I still can't hold more than 3-5 ounces of dense meat/protein, nor more than 6-8oz of mushy/full liquid consistency foods. You can still suck down a 3000 calorie milkshake with a sleeve, it's still all about choices once we're healed and trying to maintain.

On the reflux issue, I didn't have reflux with my band, nor before my band. I did develop a little reflux issue post-op, and have been on Prilosec 20mg once daily without issue ever since. I could try weaning off of it at this point, and keep saying I should try. But, I feel amazing, and I'm worried if I go off of it, then I'll get the false hunger that a lot of VSG patients talk about when they aren't on a PPI. I also don't want to experience reflux. I had reflux when I was pregnant and it wasn't pleasant. I definitely don't want it now.

The sleeve is amazing. I absolutely love life post-op and am so grateful I was able to get rid of the band.

I think that stretching (medicalese: "redilatation") is an "unknown" for VSG. However, it's less likely than things like bypass, where it is basically just a matter of when it happens, not if.

Thank you, I've technically lost 133lbs in 9 months. I maintain between 127-131 on any given day.

Go to tickerfactory.com set up your ticker to your liking with a PIN number for editing later.

Copy the bBcode then come back here to USER CP, PASTE the code into your signature, and hit Preview Signature. Ensure it is how you want it, then click SAVE SIGNATURE.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
