Beef (or Turkey) Jerky?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I'm eating "real" foods now, which is SO nice. Haven't had many problems, though at times I have a hard time determining when I will get that "UGH" full feeling, which can be very debilitating (temporarily) if I get over-full. I have to keep telling myself this is a learning process.

In that spirit, I'm wondering if anyone has tried to utilize beef or turkey Jerky as a good source of Protein? I only ask because my brother was eating some last week, and I thought "high protein! try it!" ... so I did. Chewed it really well, and had NO problems. One individual packet, which is WAY too much for me, is less than 150 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, and 20 grams of protein (that's for the beef). Similar stats for the turkey jerky. Just wondered what you all might think about this? I really want to do my best to get Proteins in via food, as the shakes and drinks just make me feel ravenous...

Best to all! :)

I started eating turkey Jerky when on the soft food stage. I got the Trader Joe's teriyaki flavored and it was so soft and easy to chew. The only thing I had to watch out for were the carbs (because of the teriyaki flavoring), but I thought it was a great source of Protein. I started beef jerky when on regular foods. I love jerky! I still use it for protein and on the go meals.

LOVE jerky... I've started going to the Farmer's Market on Saturdays to buy a pound of turkey sticks (like mini beef sticks)... they're so tender and the flavor is wonderful. They're a perfect snack! Haven't tried beef Jerky yet but only just because, not for any particular reason.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one... and I would have never thought to look at Trader Joe's, so I will definitely look there! ;) I prefer the taste and texture of the beef thus far, but I'm thinking the turkey will grow on me. Good point about the sugar and the teriyaki, so perhaps I'll look for black-pepper turkey jerky... I know they make that in beef.

Hope all are doing well in their weightloss journey! - :tongue_smilie:

I never thought to try Jerky, I love that stuff!! I need to see if I can find turkey around here. It is my favorite anyway, I like the fact that it is not so hard.

Great idea!! Tomorrow I'm on a mission, to find some jerky!

If you have a costco membership, I KNOW they have Turkey AND Beef Jerky there... Also, you might find it at Fred Meyer's or Safeway. :thumbup1: (Being a former Washingtonian, I know the stores there, hehe.)

They also have the Oh Boy Oberto shop in Auburn, but I don't get up that way very often. I looked on their website after you posted this and they have great buys!! But only at their outlet store, I'm NOW on a mission!!! I don't have a costco membership, just hubby and me. We don't buy enough to make it worth the membership.

Take care!!

I eat Jerky several times a week and love it. It goes down well and I love the fact that it helps boost my Protein level.

I forgot to mention that I still keep beef Jerky in the glove compartment of my truck. On days when I am out running errands, and socializing with the girls, I literally forget to eat. So, I always have a nice little snack in the truck that gives me Protein, and keeps me from running through a drive-up window fast food joint.

When I finish a bag of jerky, I keep that little white packet of whatever that weird stuff is we aren't supposed to eat, it keeps the jerky moist and fresh. I'll take it out of the empty package, and put it in the new package. It may not be scientifically correct and may not do anything in all honesty, but it makes me feel better about keeping a package of beef jerky in my vehicle for 2-3 weeks.

Tiff...You read my mind (or sent me an idea across the continent) as I JUST put the individual pre-packaged snack sized of the Jerky in my glove box too! I still crave certain fast foods, which I know I just cannot even bother to try, so I think this will help! I found at costco they have the "monster" bags of Jerky and the also had pre-packed sizes, so I bought both. Put the pre-packs in my purse, car, and will take them to work. Viola! Highprotein snack on the go. LOVE IT!

I read on the back of one of the jerky packs that you can refridgerate it to keep it moist, and I tried that with one of the big bags... it's SO much tastier and easier to eat out of the fridge. Let me know if you guys try it, and if you like it!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh I'll try the fridge thing because I found a place that does jerky online, and it has rave reviews. They also have bison jerky YAY YAY. Thanks for the pointer.

No problem. Speaking of "different" kinds of jerky... I saw BUFFALO Jerky at Trader Joe's yesterday, too. I guess this Bison/Buffalo thing is becoming popular? I will try it in the future and report back. Figured, I have plenty of this stuff in the house right now, so I'll wait... Let me know how the new stuff is that you try! :smile1::smile:

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
