Isn't it great that we have so many intelligent and informed sleeve buddies to gather information from? I love it!

Sleeve patients do well on all full liquids and all pureed foods the first 2 weeks post operatively. liquid yogurts, thinned refried Beans (with broth), smoothies with added egg beaters as they are a pasteurized, blended cottage cheese with pureed fruit! have fun.

Not all sleeve patients do well on this, especially when their doctors want them on clears.

The person you are responding to has a post op diet of 10 days of Clear Liquids, 10 days of full liquids, and then 10 days of soft foods.

BTW, Melonie... when did you have your sleeve? How much have you lost?

It is totally amazing that ten WL doctors have ten different post-op diet plans. I wonder why that is??????

I think they find what works for them and they don't want to change from it. Dr. A doesn't have any leaks in over 600 sleeves, I think that's why he doesn't change anything.

There is one doctor that doesn't have nearly the restricted post op diet and he has 2.5x the leaks vs. global stats. Heh... I think he hasn't found that "thing" that works for him yet. ;o)

I have to admit that I had a couple of Atkins shakes today. I emailed Nina first and she said it would be OK. I was getting shakey from no Protein to speak of for seven days. I'll still wait until Friday to go the rest of the full liquids.

Part of why there are different diets is that this isn't something that people do a lot of clinical research on. So the doctors look at related research and extrapolate from that. Since it's open to interpretation, they all interpret it a bit differently.

Some take the approach of "if one of my patients has a problem, none of my patient can do it" (okay that's a slight exaggeration). These are the programs with a list of "rules" as long as your arm about what you can and can't do and can and can't eat and when. Things like "no salad until 6 months" and "you can't chew gum forever" and a bunch of stuff that is really rather silly.

There are some "core truths" though. Like pretty much every program has you on some sort of liquid (clear, thin, full) for the first 2-3 weeks. Very few programs go faster than that in their progressions and this is because the danger of getting a leak is greatest during that time period.

I am very happy with my program... once you get on regular food, there are no hard and fast rules -- it's all about "as tolerated". Things aren't forbidden outright either -- but there are things we are supposed to "avoid". I like "avoid" better than "forbidden" and "see what works for you" better than strict lists of when to progress to what foods based on the lowest common denominator.

Dr. A. is more conservative than my doc (we don't do clears and go to softs at 2-3 weeks) but I think he mostly takes a similar approach and seems open to modifications of his instructions when they aren't working -- like Elisabeth being able to have that soy drink on clears. I like that. :laugh0:

Btw, for all you former band people, my program is adamant that bandsters stay on liquids for *at least* 3 weeks even though the DS, RnY and VSG people can start to progress earlier if they feel up to it and they say that's to prevent slippage. I bet most people think sticking to the diet isn't as important for bandsters because nothing is cut, but Dr. A and LapSF's very low slippage rate make me think they have the right of it when it comes to bands and staying on liquids.

On Day 5, I stood up and down I went. I emailed and got the OK to go to soy Protein Shakes that day and had no more problems. I wish I could get down the whey Protein but I gag on that. Soy slender drinks are the best I can manage.

It great to share the different post-op diets but it's important to follow the one your surgeon asks you to.

Btw, for all you former band people, my program is adamant that bandsters stay on liquids for *at least* 3 weeks even though the DS, RnY and VSG people can start to progress earlier if they feel up to it and they say that's to prevent slippage. I bet most people think sticking to the diet isn't as important for bandsters because nothing is cut, but Dr. A and LapSF's very low slippage rate make me think they have the right of it when it comes to bands and staying on liquids.

This is something that the band vets have been reminding people about for years. So many people believe they are on a liquid diet due to swelling and that isn't true. It's the scarring that forms on the stomach and that is what holds the band in place long term.

My doc does the same thing for banded folks, liquids for 3 weeks, period. I am sure most don't follow it just from reading lap band boards for so long but to each his own.

Okay, guys. Now I'm completely confused. During my first month post-op, what is the best way to get the "good" Protein that is also, ummmm, palatable? I'm glad this conversation came now. I was just getting ready to order the IDS shots. Oh well.

I looked at the label today at costco at the shots bullets or whatever they are called.

The ingredients said collagen.< /p>

Everyone on that other board swears that this Protein drink that you can order from vitacost.com called lean dessert is absolutely fabulous. I ordered the choc. coconut but it will come to my house and I am still in Arizona. I am anxious to try it.

It comes in something like banana bread, fudge pudding, whipped vanilla, I can't remember all of them.

I love the choc. Peanut Butter that WasA turned me on to a long time ago.

My band doc had us on liquids for 4 weeks, btw. He has the lowest complication rates in the Pacific NW, and is a center of excellence which is unheard of in such a small practice, and I don't think he's ever had a band slip.

Atkins shakes are very thin. They are about as thin as Water.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
