Starting Over

Hello it has been a long time since I have posted on this forum. I had my lap band surgery January 2011 and have yet to hit my goal weight. At one point I was down 52 pounds and then ran into some health problems. It started in August of 2012 my band out of no where tighten so bad I could not swallow my own saliva...very scary. Went and had 3cc pulled out of my band and wow I could eat again. I won't say I was totally out of control but being able to eat a normal meal did feel good. Then in October 2012I started having issues with my stomach. Pain so severe landed me in the ER to find out my gallbladder had to come out. I had large amount of stones and sluge. Scheduled my surgery for the following month only to have it cancelled because the place where I got my lap band told my surgeon my band needed to be fully emptied before surgery. One thing I would like to note is the surgeon tried for 2 weeks to speak with the lap band surgeon who never returned one call. Talk about being upset. Then I go to make the appointment to have my band emptied and can't get an appointment for 3 weeks. Long story I had my gallbladder removed by the end of November 2012. Waited a few weeks and went back to start getting my band filled again as I could feel the weight adding up on my frame. I gained 10 lbs which was not too bad in my opinion. Started walking over 3 miles a day and even started running. My weight was going back down nicely and then another set back. I started having a lot of knee pain which was worse in my left knee. Went to the doctor had an X-Ray which showed no obvioius injury. While doing some sprints on my treadmill one evening I felt a horrible pain in my knee, I was unable to walk. I went to an urgent aid had another X-ray and brace applied. Although it felt better I was never able to return to my previous workouts and started an overall decline in my success again. Many months of pain I finally got an MRI which showed a torn meniscus. Guess what another surgery. In February 2013 I had my injured left knee repaired, only to find out I also have severe arthritis in my knee (I am 48) and had ongoing pain, swelling and inability to even walk long distances. 2 months after surgery had Fluid drained off my knee and now on antiinflammatory drugs to deal with the daily pain. My weight now is up 15 pounds. I find myself turning to food to deal with current situation. My band has some restriction but I am able to eat much more than I should be so I have scheduled to have a fill on 9-20-13. This will be the start of my new weight loss journey. I need to loose at this point 70 pounds to hit goal. I am still 35 pounds down from my original weight. I am determined to not let anything Detour me again. Reading the post on this forum does give me the encouragement that I too will win this battle over my weight and build a better relationship with my band!.

I just want to give you some encouragement. I do had medical issues that intervened w/ my wl progress. However, 18 months later I decided it was time to start losing again and I did. I lost the remainder of my 50 lbs and am now getting cosmetic surgery. I just wanted to let you know it is possible to restart. Don't look at anything as a failure, just a setback. Time for take two that's all. Good luck on your ventures.

I too have knee problems but no one knows why. My knee automatically give out whenever. I've fallen onn my face more times than I can count. At one point went from a cane to a seat walker. I try to ride my bike inside even the treadmill gives me problems. I can't walk very fast which doesn't burn very many calories. So I feel your pain. Good luck on your journey.

Good luck! Among with my other disabilities my body is riddled with osteoarthritis but I still remain positive. My journey may be slower than most others but I'm getting there and that's what counts!

What does anyone if anything, find you were allergic to any food(s) while they were on clear and full liquids. I get many headaches Migraine and sinus type. Ever since I've been on the mushies and it's only been a week or less I've had several headaches. They're bad. I got an appointment for food and environmental allergy testing. I had a allergy test many years ago ...not food...but she tested me for ten differnt things and I was allergic to all ten. Pets, dander, all outside stuff, mold, mildew. It's just so horrible. I think I might go back to full liquids every other week or so. But will wait til testing. Anyone else with this problem?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
