NO WL on pre-op Liquid diet??

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have been on my pre-op liquid diet for 4 days, today starts the 5th. My surgery is on Wednesday, but I have not lost a pound?? I have not cheated once and actually find I am not super hungry until the end of the day. I usually have several items left on the list I can have, broth, Protein Shake (I get two per day), popsicles or Jello, but I hate to eat just before bed. So I feel like I should be down 5-8 lbs by now. I am frustrated but then again I am so excited about my surgery coming in just 3 days. A nurse at my pre-op appointment when over the liquid diet and information for the day of surgery said if you have not lost weight by the day the of surgery they will know you haven't followed the diet and will cancel the surgery!! Any advise?

way to go doctor's office. yeah, put a little more pressure on you because having surgery is not stressful enough. hope you can tell I'm being sarcastic but that is a crappy thing to do to you. the preop diet is about shrinking the liver, not shrinking you. i would not let them intimidate you. you know you've been compliant and the doctor will know as well when he sees your liver is not fatty. tell them but make sure they don't try to cancel the surgery. .

are you drinking plenty of Water? I would wonder if you are consuming a lot of sodium right now.

broth is typically very high in sodium. Just drink lots of Water and don't worry about what the nurse said... I would be absolutely SHOCKED if the doctor cancelled the surgery because HE would lose money!!

I lost nothing on the pre-op. i found it to be very unrealistic. I gave it 110% for 4 days before i cheated. If i cld lose weight on my own i wldnt need lap band. Its impossible to go cold turkey overnight. Even with sitting outside during lunch where people arent eating was difficult..

When the nurse called 3days before my surgery date to give me the arrival time she asked how was the preop diet goin and i told her terribly!! She said as long as i hadnt gained from the last visit it wld be fine.

August 1 my surgery went off without a hitch.

I paid outta pocket for the procedure so idk if it wldve been different if my insurance was paying. I know the insurance companies come with certain stipulations.

And idk get why some doctors require the preop and others do not.

The only thing tht wld get ur surgery cancelled is eating the night before U must go on a 12 hr fast im talkn not even a drop of Water from brushing ur teeth 12hrs before surgery. Now that will have them send u packing!

The nurse should not have told you that. The pre-op diet is just to shrink your liver before surgery. As long as you're not gaining, I wouldn't worry about what she said. I also highly doubt your surgeon would cancel over something like that. I lost about 5 lbs on my pre-op diet, but I started it a month before my surgery (I didn't know when my surgery would be, and I have a high BMI so I wanted to get my liver as small as possible beforehand). I cheated a lot, but only so much as I ate a regular dinner instead of a diet meal (my diet consisted of 2 Protein Shakes and a diet meal for dinner, a high protein/high Fiber snack if I had enough calories left). I think I was supposed to get 800-900 calories and I usually ended up eating around 1000. I only lost the 5lbs BUT my surgeon said my liver and stomach had shrunk considerably. They were almost to normal size when he did my surgery. Even with being really heavy and having a very high BMI, because of the diet he was able to use a small band on me. That's the whole goal of the diet. Stick to it the best you can and don't worry. The only thing you definitely have to do is the 12 hr fast, but that's easy because you'll be asleep for most of it!

My surgery is tomorrow and I've lost 10 pounds, but after 2PM I'm on completely liquids. I'm going to have a little clear broth around supper time and that is it. I have been bored on this pre-op diet, but I have not been hungry, food seems gross right now. I wasn't loosing any weight either until the Nutritionist, who is also a nurse, told me I could make my own Soups, etc. I ditched the canned junk and I feel better and super satisfied. I've heard from a lot of people who are on pre-op diets and I have NEVEr heard that a procedure would be cancelled because of no weight loss.

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
