Let me get this right...some of you drink soda? Whoa!!!

Recommended Posts

I was told NO carbonated beverages... now over the past 7 years I didn't listen to my doctor and tried diet pop twice and thought I was going to DIE... then a few years later I tried beer... same thing... thought DEATH was near... NEVER again... my doctor knows best... that was 5 years ago... and in my opinion if there is a SLIGHT chance that it may harm the band I say why risk it.

Tom, Toronto

Banded July 6 06

Both the surgeon and nutritionist said soda and beers may cause discomfort and both are high in calories and should not form part of a healthy diet. They both confirmed that they aren't forbidden, but to have Water as the go to drink of choice.

If I am having a soda, I only have diet and need to pour it out and let it go flat, or the occasional post mix with ice I find is relatively flat.

I've had a few beers as well as champagnes post surgery over the past year, but definitely get a sense if fullness drinking them and happily satisfied with just a couple.

My doctor said flat carbonated beverages were ok if it did not cause me discomfort. Well even very flat carbonated beverages cause me a great deal of discomfort. It causes me to have gas as bad as after my surgery so I have had to say good bye to carbonated drinks. It's not a big loss as I have learned to enjoy plain old ice Water just as much.

The makers of the Lap Band say no to carbonated beverages while most doctors agree with that some do say that carbonated beverages are okay. I waited a year before I had my first carbonated beverage and don't seem to have any trouble drinking them. However, the band is something that we have in our bodies for years and years, hopefully, and it's hard to tell what might negatively affect us long term. I think you are better off not having soda if you can help it and play it safe. Not to mention that it usually leads to the sugary stuff which is bad for our weight. That being said, I do enjoy my bubbly :D

I was banded 15th June. Pre op I was told no "fizzy" drinks at all..

But post op.. Have been told (by my surgeon) that I have no reason that I can't drink them as long as I take my time and are not through a straw.

I'm now on 6mls in my 10ml band and I can drink them fine. I think it all depends on the individual but remember to have diet or zero sugar because its wasted calories! X x

I've had my band for almost 4 years. I drink those carbonated ICE waters and beer fairly regularly. If it makes me really burpy, I just do a high pour into a glass to release some of the carbination. My Dr's motto is basically: try it and see how your body responds. There aren't really any hard rules.

FWIW: You will always get conflicting advice on this site b/c there isn't a standardized set of LB rules.

Agreed....the only hard and fast rule is to "Listen to your band!" and OBEY IT....you will never go wrong....

Like your Dr. said "try it and see how your body (band) responds" There are days where i will start to drink something carbonated and will immediately stop because the band starts sending me little warnings....

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
