People really are rude...

Recommended Posts

A little gripe to share.

So I am sitting at my desk at work this morning and my old boss comes in to say hello. We chat for a few minutes and all is very pleasant and then he says

"ohhh you weren’t here last week one day when I came in to see you"

"No I wasn’t, I went home ill last Wednesday and didn’t come back till Monday because I had severe food poisoning"

"ohhh I bet you have been eating too much McDonalds." and then laughs at me.

"Actually no, it wasn’t that at all."

REALLY!!!!! What the..... How rude! Sure I am chubby, sure I am booked in for lap banding (he is unaware) but I am not at McDonalds every day, not even once a month! I love how people always assume you must eat junk all day long to be fat. I actually eat generally good food, I just eat too much of it!

I'm really glad I have not told lots of people about my procedure. The audacity! I wish I was able to think more quickly and say something back but I was just too taken aback and he was my boss so I guess I feel like it is difficult to say something in return!

Has anyone else experienced this recently?

Thanks guys, yeah I guess I don't need to say anything, but sometimes I just don't think people realise how detrimental comments like that are to people like us. A few yrs ago I would have been devastated, today I just thought you insensitive **** and got a bit angry.

He is an older man who has known me for 4 yrs and has been very good to me for the most part, nearly dad like (he has daughters my age) but today I was pretty disappointed.

He probably meant it is a joke, but it came out unusually cruel! Many people just don't think before opening their mouths. we have all, well most of us, have been in the situation of "open mouth, insert foot". As others said, you need to rise above these folks! Bless you and welcome to the banded life! Karen

Ohh wow it blocked a word I used! I didn't even use a swear word!

I am sure he has foot in mouth disease! In a few weeks I will be losing weight and he can go eat McDonalds! :D

Classic foot-in-mouth! I did it recently. I walked into my daughter's school, and I'm very cool with the security people. As I was waiting for my daughter's class to come down, I got close to one of the security officers and said: WHAT'S THATS MELL?! IT SMELLS LIKE FEET (thinking it was one of the hormonal teenagers around us) she said: What, my Chinese food? And pointed to it.... I almost died!! I tried to play it off and say, nooooo, it CAN'T be your food, I think someone is eating Doritos. LoL....

And if you wanna read a horror story, read my post titled "I'm A Whimp".... It's similar to yours, except your old boss' intentions might not have been to hurt you, unlike what happened to me.

That's ok...you will get the last laugh when you become successful with your lapband and he sees you shrinking away...isn't it funny how some people love to make others feel miserable? That is a sign of insecurity--they are making you feel bad to elevate themselves! It's a classic move and lots of men do it! I might say back at him. "Ya know... I just can't seem to eat four quarter pounders like I used to". You don't need to give him am explanation or feel bad about yourself at all.. I'm sure he's not perfect looking! Keep on trucking forward and let us know how you do! It will be sweet revenge to see his face when your successful!

Ha ha ladies you made me laugh ;D I can think of a number of things to say but I never will - makes it harder that I used to be in the military and he was a senior officer to me. He is a kind man and I know he doesn't see me as unattractive or anything like that as he often compliments me on my appearance (eg. you look lovely today said in a dad way not a creepy old man way!) I am sure his heart is in the right place, but perhaps sees just also me as overweight.

insensitive? yes. since you have the relationship that you do with him, i suspect he may be trying to improve his own diet/ health, what he said may have been more about his behavior, past or present regarding mcdonalds, than an insult drected at you. hugs.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
