How do your other doctors feel about you tting the lapband?

I only see my endocrinologist regularly. And when I saw him after the surgery, he seemed genuinely glad that I had gotten the surgery. I was pleasantly surprised. He's even started doing extra bloodwork for me. He checks all types of levels more than just for my thyroid to make sure I'm staying healthy with the reduced calorie intake.

Actually my Dr's PA was the one who encouraged me.. She was concerned about my diabetes and blood pressure.. I also had some issues with my knees and back.. She had asked me if I wanted to go to a seminar about it and I said yes. I haven't seen her since my surgery I know she would be so pleased.. I am scheduled to go back next week.. my blood sugar has been below 100 every day, blood pressure down to 136/78 this am which is great for me.. so, I owe her a huge thanks .. I might take her some flowers...

My PCP initially was sceptical as he only had one other patient who had a lap band and they did not do well.

But he was supportive as I was going through the pre-op preparation.

I just went to see him after a year and he was genuinely happy, as was the office staff.

When he asked me whether I was taking the BP and cholesterol lowering meds, I said no and he smiled big and congratulated me. My BP and cholesterol are normal!!!! It was a wonderful visit. When I asked when to come back , he loudly said, "next year"!!!!

I wondered what the response has been from your 'other' Drs.,when they Lund out you had often the lapband? I am sill in the 'contemplating' stage.

My doctor was like go for it girl. she said that its the only one she will stand behind that is really safe she loved the idea

My PCP is the only doctor besides my surgeon that knows about my surgery so far. Although my PCP did not suggest getting the Lap Band when I told her I was looking into it, she was excited for me and actually said It was a good idea, and that she recently was at a weight loss center speech or some sort and knew info and sat there and talked to me about it. Now I am 19 days post op, and it was the best thing I did for myself. My PCP is leaving the practice but when I seen her post op she requested that when I get to where I am comfortable with my weight she would like me to send her a picture of me, pre and post so she can see how well I did. I wish she wasn't leaving because I have seen so much of her since January with the whole 6 month supervised diet and all, plus my kids seen her, I am going to miss her.

My PCP was fully supportive of me at the start of the process. Then I lost 20 pounds on the physician supervised diet and he felt then that I could do it on my own and was no longer as supportive. (I had lost that same 20 pounds at least a dozen times before!) When it came time to write a letter to the insurance company, he wouldn't say he recommended it for me, but did say that I would benefit from it. Luckily, with all the other documentation on file, they approved me!

My PCP was thrilled. He never mentioned my weight, but we both knew I was the elephant in the room. It was my cardiologist who got me going. He told me if I couldn't do it myself, there were other ways, meaning surgery.

After the first 4mths post op, no longer on b/p medicine.

Our first PCP was not thrilled about the idea of my wife and I having a lap band so after a year of research we found another PCP who was supportive and recommended the surgery. Our lap band surgeon recommend the sleeve but we both got lap bands.

Our current PCP is thrilled with the progress even though it has been slow I am sure that I would be higher than my highest weight of 330 without the lap band as a helpful tool.

My PCP is not on board with the lap band. I went to him about it a few years ago and he pretty much said it was a bad idea and that I would need to lose 40 pounds on my own before he would even consider it for me. At the time I was thinking that if I could lose 40 pounds I would have done it already! This time around I didn't even consult him and went right to True Results. I guess he'll figure it out next time I need to see him and hopefully he'll see that it was the right choice for me! My orthopedic doctor who did my knee surgery in December was the one who suggested I look into getting the lapband so he's totally on board and supportive, and my physical therapist is too because obviously any weight I lose will make me healthier and will be better on my knees!

My doc is very cool with it. He's been extremely pleased with my weight loss and has never said anything negative about me getting banded.

Yesterday I had my appointment with the PCP. This is the first time he's seen me since January. With my 50 lbs. weight loss he couldn't help being pleased with my progress. He said does not encourage his patients to have Lapband surgery because he had not had any of his patients succeed. I hope I left him with a better impression of Lapband surgery. I told him that I would do it again if I had to do over. I felt I was well prepared for the surgery, the recovery and living with the band. Going into it with a good team, and lots of support makes a world of difference. You also have to be willing to put in the work. It's all worth it.

My PCP was anti banding. She wanted me to lose it on my own and promised she'd be there every step and every pound. *rolling eyes*. She quit a month later, but not before I'd convinced her to give me approval to look into it with the informational seminar. Turns out that approval acted as a "recommendation." I never looked back!

I actually had already decided to go forward with my surgery before i find my pcp. I had to have a physician on file and when i met with her the first time, i told her my goal and asked if she would be supportive of it. She wad on board immediately, and had been a wonderful resource. She was already acquainted with my surgeon, and has two other bariatric patients...one with a sleeve, the other with RNY. I was very lucky to find her to To support me on this journey. Having a supportive pcp is instrumental for success.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
