Does anyone here Home School?

Recommended Posts

Plunder, I understand what it's like to get MAD at schools! Anyway, my 17 year old has struggled w/ADHD and LD. He's doing better now.

The good thing is that Texas has very liberal homeschooling laws. I checked it out myself. It's basically your school (home) and your way. Obviously, most parents want to give the best education possible. Yes, I believe that once you want them to return to public school, then they go into the grade that they are supposed to be. I am not sure how that works (testings, age, etc).

Hook up with a homeschooling support group in your area. They will give you the "scoop." Plus, they often have classes and educational outing together, if you choose to go that route.

Good luck. Shawn

From a kid's point of view...

I was in public school from 1st thru 4th grade, then Catholic school in the 5th and 6th... Then homeschooled for 7th and 8th (which I drug out for 3 years) I finally insisted that my mother send me back to school. I was crawling deeper and deeper into a hole. Kids need the social aspects of school... which you can get when homeschooled if you try... I have read your story and I would be put out with the school system also... but just stick with your commitment to do it. You have to stay on top of things as I am sure you well know since you have done it before.

I just cringe at the thought of how shy and horrible my home school life was. My mom is great, but she was not at that time disciplined to do this. It is a LOT of work and takes a lot out of a mom. Plus, having your kids with you all day every day...

I know this sounds like I am downing homeschooling, but it definitely was not for me.

I wish you the best of luck and I know that you are quite capable of doing this.

Just please make sure the kiddos get involved in some other things with kids their age.

Ok, like Heather, I have the opinion of a homeschooled kid.

I went to Christian Private school from k-half of 2nd grade. I was getting in trouble for goofing off in class, but all my work was done. They called my mom into complain about my behavior and she said "She's bored, give her harder work and challenge her", and the teacher (also the principal's wife) refused, so she pulled me and home schooled me the rest of 2nd grade and 3rd grade.

I agree with Heather that it's good for kids to have the social part of school. My mom found a homeschool group, and we'd do fieldtrips and stuff with them.

It was a long time ago, so I could be wrong, but when mom put me into public school for the 4th grade, I do not believe I had to take any tests or anything to prove what level I was at.

I think I would have had a better education if my mom had continued to homeschool me, but since my dad's a deadbeat, she had to work. :P

Thanks guys!

I did get a call from the school today asking if we had the paperwork from Eden park old school they are seeing what all the options are. I told them yes I asked for a copy of the report card but its blank! no grade listed! I'm so upset, I know she told me on phone it was blank but I really did not expect a school to mail me a blank report card! they have to have records right? apparently not! Arrrg!

Guest ASPHALT ANGEL

I went to home school from 5th thru 7th grade, My mom used Christian Liberty Academy School System, whick is an accredited home school. If you type in Christian Liberty Academy home school you should find it. I checked it out a few minutes ago and it is still going strong. Very good system and we had no problems with going back to public school...my brother was in highschool and he had no problems getting credit for his home school classes. If you want anymore info on this school let me know.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
