See a therapist and let them help you. Honestly, I think that anyone that gets WLS should have mandatory therapy anyway. You'd be surprised how much it can help. At least this doctor didn't just want to make an easy buck and actually seems to care about you as an individual and see you succeed.

This is one of those very touchy subjects. If you take just one moment and read what you wrote, there are some insights there.

I'm so upset right now he tells me I have to go see a weekly therapist, I'm not quite sure how he expects me to put me first I have a family!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know what to think right now I'm just sitting here crying ready to give up

If you are feeling that way then there may be something to what the Dr. is trying to tell you. When we have a family it is VERY hard to put ourselves first in anything, but when you have a surgical procedure you HAVE to put yourself first.

There are very strict guidelines and rules that must be followed, before and especially after. A surgeon is not going to risk performing a surgery on you if you are not going to make the time and commitment to taking care of yourself. It could spell disaster for him, but mostly for you and your family.

Taking the time to see a therapist may just be the first step in the journey for you, don't be upset. We all have a different path, and it starts in different places and different ways.

Don't give up, not on you or what you want if WLS is part of that don't give up on that either.

You took the time to write this post, and to read the replies so take some time to think about taking the next step for yourself no matter what that may be. A 6 week supervised diet, a one year follow up with a nutrionist, a 2 week pre-op diet or checking in with a different doctor's office for another opinion or whatever it may be. Mostly make time for you, and you will make you and everyone you care for happy.

I wish you the best of luck!

Lisa Caron

You've received some wise, sound advice here.

I know you're upset and frustrated- and rightfully so. I would be too. I know you can't see this right now but that doctor did you a huge favor. So many people fail miserably with the Lap Band because their mind isn't in the right place to do what is necessary for success. If you follow up with weekly therapy as recommended, you will be so much better prepared to deal with the changes required. Don't look at this like a denial, look at this as a chance to get better prepared. You're still on your path to a new healthier you and this extra step will do nothing but increase your chances for long term success.

By the way, I've said numerous times on these forums that if I'd had the Lap Band surgery two years before I did, I'd have failed miserably. My head was definitely not in the right place and there is no way I could've made the changes I needed for success. Going through counseling before I had Lap Band surgery was without a doubt the best thing for me.

You can totally do this- don't give up!

You can still out your family first with out neglecting yourself. I do it everyday. Something with the ban you need that will power and you are going to have to be able to follow through or it wont work. See the therapist. It will help you and you will have much success with your band

Hi... I agree with the above comments... "I'm just sitting here crying ready to give up" you have a defeated attitude already.

Lapband is not an easy fix - recovery is painful, and you will have to rest and be on liquids, it's a lot of sacrifice and you have to change your lifestyle drastically. You can't have breads, beers, sodas, etc... not a lot of people understand that - and if your psych wants you to get therapy, then maybe you have some underlying issues that you have to work out... Take your psych's advice and go through the process.... You will be a better LB patient for it :)

Hang in there

I would be frustrated too but do not give up. Just like the 2 week pre op diet it sucks but it is what you have to do to get the surgery. Do what they say and do not give up on yourself. I believe in you!

I thought the psych evaluation was to evaluate wether the person understands what they are about to do, severity of it, what it takes to succeed and that they are sound mentally.

I don't doubt that you are in a bad place; not taking care if yourself. We were all there.

I don't think that you will be harmed by following orders. Like Mis said it will make you a better bandster but I would get a second opinion.

Just remember that if you do get a second opinion and they pass you you HAVE to follow through, you CAN'T give up, you MUST stick to the program for success.

Hugs to you!

I would get a 2nd opinion too. BTW, my evaluation was like150 questions, all the same just worded differently.

FIND ANOTHER PSYCHOLOGIST! I had to complete a 344 question questionnaire as well as answer other questions during my discussion with the Psych. There is no way to determine how mentally fit/prepared you are for this by asking 4 lousy questions! Go a step further and ask for your money back, that was a rip-off!!!

I didn't have to fill out a questionnaire!! When I spoke with the Psych, he asked me why am I considering WLS, Do I have support, am I ready to look n feel different, do I know the risks of the surgery? Throughout the discussion, he was well aware that I have anxiety & panic attacks. (Treated by meds) I was still cleared!! Seek out another psych & inform them while making the appt u need Bariatric Surgery Clearance ..

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
