So I'm 1 day post-op. Just got home from the hospital. I cannot believe the shoulder pain! I remember coming out the anesthesia and it being my first complaint. I did tons of research and never once read about this side effect! It's awful. I hurts worse than my incisions. The Dr and nurses explained that it's from the gas they put in the cavity to do the operation, but golly, it hurts!

Had my surgery March 13, 2013. And my shoulder hurt and the pain put me into tears. The more activity I was, the faster the gas left. So I began to walk daily. Not that I have continued this but the pain is gone. Best of luck.

I had very bad shoulder pain immediately after surgery. The hospital gave me this little beauty and between it and the pain meds, I was snoozing in no time:

I'm sure there are other brands/similar products, I liked this one because it also has aromatherapy. Popping it into the microwave for 1 minute and then putting it on my shoulders was a HUGE "aaaaahhhhh...." moment

Wow...surprised you did not know about this. Shoulder pain after surgery comments are all over this forum. It's a very common thing and yes, is due to the gas they use during the surgery. It helps to walk walk walk and use a heating pad. Good luck.

day 5 to about 8, i wanted hub to take his chainsaw and remove my left shoulder

it will pass, i promise...take pain meds to help (walk as much as you can)...gas x did not help my shoulder......use a heating pad, a hot water bottle and my fave, stand in hot shower with Water hitting my shoulder..i can promise it will get better even though it doesnt seem like it now.

On the site, I focused mainly on pre-op. Wish I had dug a little deeper into post-op. Nothing knowing could have done for this pain though!

Oh.....OK. Duh...I should have realized that. True that knowing about this would not have changed anything but at least you wouldn't have been so taken by surprise. Hope the posts are making you feel a little better in that you are experiencing what many of us experienced as well.

I'm over 3 weeks post op and the shoulder pain was HORRIBLE!!!! I was told about it but I'm with Hub's old lady on here, I wanted my husband to chop my left shoulder off. I walked I did the pain meds I did the Gas X and it took 2 weeks to go away. Heating pad and I bought one of those neck things you microwave and the heat felt good but it's a pain that you cannot describe. Good luck and it will leave but it takes a while.

Don't let us scare you, honestly is the best medicine! I can assure you that the gas pains will go away, but yes they are horrible! I can barely feel mine now and I am just 1 week fresh out of surgery. I feel 110% better, but hungry.

Don't be scared!! It's nothing your pain meds can't handle...just take them on time (no merit points for being a "tough guy/gal"), sip your Water and walk as much as possible and you'll be back to normal before you know it :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
