Post Op 1 week bad breath

Recommended Posts

My wife has pointed out over the past 2 days that my breath is very metallic and powerfully awful. She of course began the Google search for the worst ailment I could have and is now afraid I have internal bleeding. Anyone else experience this and have a much more positive explanation?

I'm a recovery room nurse, it is common after surgery to have a metallic taste from anesthesia. Very normal. Another thing to consider is you are probably not drinking as much, so you may be a little dehydrated. Also, you are probably taking in large amounts of Protein but not carbs so that can cause you to have bad breath (ketosis). If your urine is dark that is an indicator that you need to drink more Water. Hope this helps!

My doc warned me about bad breath post op. He said that while you are quickly burning calories, a side effect of that can sometimes be bad breath. This isn't always the case, but it happens to some people.

I'm almost 3 weeks post op and the first week I experienced the same thing. Once I started eating puréed foods it got better. Just drink lots of water...there isn't much else to do. Oh and don't breath on your wife, LOL

I too had horrible breath after surgery, no idea what causes it, but according to others on here its related to surgery. But nothing serious. Someone else suggested keetosis (sp).

Thanks all. I definatley know I haven't been drinking enough Water so I'll work on that. I will however use this gift to constantly breathe on my wife to keep her from giving me any chores.

I had the same problem and my husband would stand far away from me at times, lol! Since we aren't supposed to chew gum, I was told by my Dr. that sugar free mints were ok to use. Thank goodness for icebreaker mints!! :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
