Removal 6/3/13

Recommended Posts

I'm having my band removed and converted to the sleeve on 7/10/13. I'm so done with the band and the port and can't wait to get it out.

I had my lapband removed on 06/11/2013 at Kaiser for the same reason you did. I have been vomiting for years and had seen a surgeon for a conversion and did not follow through. I thought the vomiting was for another reason. Every person I saw had a theory for the vomiting. I returned back to Kaiser a month ago and they learned I had been vomiting for over two years they removed the band immediately. Kaiser said they had removed most bands and don't use them anymore. I was unable to convert to the sleave as Kaiser won't do convesions. I am grateful for the chance to eat again as I too has been mainly on fluids. On good days I was able to keep down eggs, tuna, Soup and sometimes salad. I also had weeks where I was vomiting up all fluids.

I always had trouble with vomiting but it was easier at times. I lost 70 pounds, put back 50 and then lost 50 again. I am up again to 275 which is less that my 313 starting weight. I am confident I will choose healthy foods and walk so I can get to 200 which is my goal weight. The band did change my relationship with food. I am no longer eating fast foods and sugar. I will look for a lot of support to stay on a food plan and work towards getting healthy again.

I want to say it took an hour and half to remove the band. They needed six incisions to remove it and I am heavily bruised where the port came out. It did not migrate like yours however the scaring was heavy. I hope your surgery goes well.

I wanted to have mine out so I could do the revision but my insurance won't cover another procedure unless the dr can prove there was a medical failure with the band. I am terrified to go without anything.

Mine is coming out Aug 6th. Aug 4th would be 4 yrs with band and port issues. Not sure what I will convert to if I do at all. My Dr. is telling me either sleeve, or bypass. I'm at 215 now before removal so I would think that bypass is out. good luck to you

I am 5 days post op and so glad the band is out. The doc said he thought it would be an easy removal but had some difficulty getting it out due to some adhesions. I'm so glad I made the decision to remove it before it did some real long term damage. I was lucky enough to convert to the sleeve in the same surgery. I was 225 going in to surgery so we are pretty close. I thought bypass was too extreme for what I needed and I also debated about if I should do anything at all. In the end I remembered why I did the band to begin with and the likelihood I would regain if I didn't do the sleeve. That made the decision easier. Other than the difficulty removing the band and having to take a little more of my stomach than he wanted, I did fine with no complications and came home the next day. Good luck to you on your removal.

I'm just curious...the issues with keeping stuff down, was that a problem from the beginning with you guys? Or did it come a later?

Hi there,

I have been suffering with my lapband off and on for the past 5 years, coming to a head now. I have been unable to get any food down, it feels like it is just hovering in my esophagus. It escalated two weeks or more ago...i have lost track of time...when I began to get horrible bouts of heartburn, before I knew it I went from never taking antacids, to taking them several times a day every day, as well as Prevacid and Prilosec for 14 day intervals. Now if I lie down my mouth fills up with bile, horrid metallic taste, and burns . I have been sleeping in an upright chair, I have not slept for days because of it. I have these spasm and then lower abdominal cramping. I finally got thru to the Dr. who did my initial surgery and will have it let out. Since I do not have insurance at this time, I have to wait to have it removed, but I do want it removed. I have not felt well since I have had it and do regret the surgery. I feel so under nourished. I can't eat salads, most veggies raw or otherwise. I can't wait to see this guy tomorrow, seriously I have been suffering and I am done.

I have been reading posts, and I am pretty concerned...lots of tales of scarring, complications, etc. what is a "sleeve"?

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
