I was told no- I gave it up when I started my preop diet. Really haven't missed it as much as I thought I would.

I was allowed it pre-op, but was told post-op is a big no no. One day not thinking I turned up the hubs Dt. Dew and drank 2 swallows- big mistake. It hurt like hell. I rather not ever have soda again.

You probably can but generally shouldn't.

Reasons not to drink diet soda after the band

*the caffeine and acid (that creates the carbonation) may slow healing.

*the carbonation may cause expansion of the pouch created by the band. The more often this expansion occurs the less effective the pouch will be.

*the carbonation may cause expansion below the band pushing the band above the stomach and onto the esophagus making it useless for weightloss and possibly causing additional damage.

*dt soda reinforces your brain's desire to consume "sweet" things making it harder for you to eliminate other sweet things from your diet and generally resulting in more instances of head hunger.

You might be lucky and experience none of the above. You need to ask yourself though is it worth the risk of experiencing 1,2, or even all of them.

I drank it preop. I'm a year out and very occasionally drink it. When I drink it, I get the smallest serving available and sip it. If I chugged that would hurt. I'm a believer in moderation. I don't think one soda a month will hurt ya, but once a day? Negative.

My doctors office has never told me differently. They're pretty big believers in moderation too.

Lots of different OPINIONS about this...I drink beer occasionally. I'll post links from doctors and let you decide if you trust them....

Ask your doctor. Some allow it, "As much as you want", per Dr. O'Brien. He's considered a lapband "pioneer" surgeon...

FROM Dr. SIMPSONS website....You see his name on here touted a LOT.

http://drsimpson.net...olden-rules.htm

From His website:

"Any calorie containing liquids will tend to flow past the restriction of the band and not give you any feeling of satiety. You are then more likely to take too much. You are only allowed to drink: Water mineral Water tea or coffee (with low fat milk if you wish but no sugar) low calorie soft drinks (but be careful with the gas) An exception to the “no liquid calorie” rule is a glass of wine with meals which we have shown is good for your health and good for your weight loss when taken in a modest amount."

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
