Could of had a May Surgery date...

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm feeling at bit overwhelmed at the moment and really need to vent to those who understand. I went to the weight loss information seminar today and I got a overwhelming amount of info about all the different bariactric surgeries. By the time i ha gotten all this info and a nurse tried to convince me that lapband was the wrong choice I freaked! I could have had a date in may but I decided I wasn't ready. Im graduating on the 19th and going on a cruise in June. After that I think I should be ready to decided on a date.....

I am curious why they said it was the wrong choice.

Who was it the wrong choice for ?

You or the surgeon?

I was confused to why the nurse would question my choice ... She had, had the sleeve so I guess she felt it was better ... Definitely thru me off...

Take her advice with a grain of salt. I know if someone asked me which was the best I'd lean heavily towards the band. If she had success with her choice, it's understandable why she would recommend the sleeve. And she may be right. I think each surgery has it's own pros and cons. But it really comes down to matching the patient psyche with the WLS that best fits that patient.

The education process before surgery is quite inadequate for many patients and from many doctors. There are several on this forum who should have gone with the sleeve or bypass but went with the band thinking this little piece of plastic would rid them of their eating demons? Doesn't always work that way. Sorry, way off topic now.

I was told a similar thing. I was told that I would probably be back getting a sleeve or RNY after failing at lap bad. I really think it depends on what type of person you are. I am very type A and I'm self pay. Why in the world would I even consider letting myself 'cheat' when I have shelled out my savings to get this lap band!? Saying those things to you are just wrong. You will do well, and you will be successful with lap band!

Perhaps you should talk to some other surgeons. I talked to 3 different ones before I made my decision. I heard about the sleeve from them all, but the one thing that stuck with me regarding the sleeve is that it's a newer procedure so they don't have a lot of long term data on it yet, and it's a more drastic procedure that requires cutting & removing a portion of your stomach, and it isn't reversible. The surgeon I went with didn't recommend the sleeve over the Lapband for those same reasons which made sense to me. This is a big decision so you should wait until you are ready and feel at ease with the program/doc that you decide to go with.

Good Luck, keep us posted!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
