Nauseated after protein shakes

Recommended Posts

First of all I want to let you know that I had surgery last Thursday. Right after surgery I was put on a full liquid diet by my surgeon. I didn't have to do Clear liquids. I was asked to start my Protein supplements right away. I was having terrible nausea every morning since surgery and it would get remarkably better in the afternoon. I thought I was possibly taking in to much liquid at once so I broke up my Protein shake so I drank half in the morning and half in the evening and i was literally nauseated ALL DAY. Now today I had a meeting this morning and didn't want to be sick so I didn't drink it this morning and I feel like 100 percent better. I am going to try to make a shake with only one scoop of powder this afternoon and dilute the Protein because maybe that's causing the issue however im struggling. I know i need the protein and I know that im sick after drinking it.......So far I have two brands GNC sells that has 20gm of protein per scoop.

Anyone with this similar issue or any suggestions for me???

Are you lactose intolerant? If you try almond milk with your Protein Powder. Are you drinking only one shake a day? Sounds like not enough. Call your nutritionist or surgeon and check in with them.

I have been using soy milk for one...I am wondering if im putting to much Protein in one shake....each scoop has 20 grams and i only need 60. I was just trying to compound it in one drink because ill admit shakes are not my favorite thing. I see my doc tomorrow so Ill talk then...I might try a shake tonight with just one scoop of powder....I am just not looking forward to it...This is the bset ive felt since surgery.

I've read on other boards that your body can't absorb more than 30g of Protein at a time. So one scoop with soymilk is putting you at 26 per shake without the second scoop.

You should try spreading your calories out during the day to keep your body fueled...not trying too get in all your protien at once.

Hope you feel better!

I also was nauseated from some Protein Shakes I got from GNC. I bought them & returned them in the same day. I was nauseated for several hours after drinking them. I ended up drinking Adkins shakes (don't like dark choc but do love the shake). I have been able to tolerate Muscle Milk but it doesn't taste as good as either if the chocolate Atkins shakes. Only down side is they are only 15 grams Protein.< /p>

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
