To be banded May 17!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, :brick:

I don't think that I have posted an intro of myself here yet, but I have already posted a few messages on the boards and have been reading others' messages for a few weeks now.

I am Cathy, 47, married, from northwest Arkansas, and I will be banded by Dr. Arturo Rodriguez in Monterrey, Mexico on May 17, 2006.

I am soooooooo excited! :P I am totally ready for this procedure. My weight is causing me lots of problems.... in fact, I am having to stay home from work today because my knee has been strained from walking across campus yesterday. :crutch:This weight can't come off soon enough! Anyway, I'm just glad that this forum is here to help everyone already banded and for those who are looking to get the procedure done.

Lots of kudos to everyone who contributes! :clap2:

Thanks for allowing me to be a part of this forum.

Cathy in NW AR

Hi Cathy - I am also being banded on May 17th, but over the other side of world, in Australia. 2.5 weeks to go 'Band Buddy'!!!!

I hope your knee is better soon, and just think - not long to go til the 17th, then it's all 'downhill' from there

I'm very excited too, but also a little scared/nervous, which I suppose is normal. I have to do a 'liquid' diet for 2 weeks before surgery (to reduce the fat around the liver), so this is my last weekend of eating freely, and I'm ashamed to say that I'm making the most of it

Anyway, rest easy & I'm sure I'll catch up with you soon.

How great! I'm also new here and my date is May18th. I'm in Nebraska and have wanted this surgery soooo long that I can hardly believe that it's only a few weeks away. I am looking forward to learning all that I can to make this one of the best experiences of my life.

Hi Lauri,

Way cool! You and I are starting close to the same weight also. I'm about 302 right now. My PCP ordered some tests for me before I go..... EKG, chest x-ray, blood tests, but I didn't swallow the camera. I'll also have tests in Mexico. So when in May are you having it done?

Well, Cathy & Marz88, this time in 24 hours I will be a bandit (9:45am in Melbourne, Australia @ moment). I have to be at the hospital @ 7am, & my nurse has advised that I'm first on the list ......

I'm feeling like a bit weird at the moment, as I'm pretty calm. There's a couple of girls on my local chat board who are also being done tomorrow, and they've written that they're pretty nervous & emotional right now. I'm even feeling a bit guilty because they feel upset right now & I'm not (yet?).

How are you two going anyway? Hope everything's going OK for you both, and that the last few days are not too emotional - I'll send some of my calmness over to you right now, OK? <<<cyber-hug>>>

I'm probably staying 2 nights in hospital, so should be out by Friday morning. I'll email you as soon as I can afterwards to let you know how I went.

:gluck:

Hi Heth,

I am not really nervous yet. I'm afraid that it will probably hit me when I go into pre-op. When I get those nervous thoughts in my head, I just tell myself that I have a good surgeon and he knows what he's doing. That's what keeps me from getting too nervous. :)

Oh yeah, and I also try to think of this as a "procedure" rather than "surgery". Mind control! LOL

Good luck! I know everything will go fine for you. :success1:

Hey Cathmo!

Best wishes on the 17th! On the 18th, I have to be to the hospital by 8:00am and I believe I'll be the second of the day. I'm so anxious to begin this journey, I'm not nervous at all, just excited. Let us know how everything goes, I won't be back until late on the 19th. God Bless!

And here's to you Heth68! Best wishes on your surgery, time is winding down and it won't be long and we'll all be on the other side of the Banded Life. It just can't happen soon enough. I hope you have a great support team behind you. Don't be nervous if you don't have to be, it's just wasted energy. God Bless!

p.s. My husband is more nervous than I'll ever be, he acts like I'm having brain surgery.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
