Bipolar and thinking about it

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have bipolar, and my meds have screwed up my weight badly since the first time I was put on psych meds at 18 (I'm 30 now). After many years, I'm pretty stable on the mental health front, but the cost has been pretty severe, weight-wise. As a teenager, I gained 40lb in 6 months, and I fought to get half of that off. I went off meds, and now that I've been back on, I've gained an additional 80 in the past 4 years. The only time I've been anything approaching "normal" weight was after six months of intense mania (exercising like mad and being OCD about not eating), and I was down to a BMI of 30 and size 8 pants. Each time I adjust my meds, there's a definite spike on the weight chart, and no matter how hard I fight, and track, and do what feels like everything I can, I end up going nowhere.

I brought this up with my psychiatrist at my monthly med-checkup, and ended up nearly breaking down. I'm on Seroquel now, and while it works very well on my brain (I sleep like a charm, and that's a rare thing), I've gained at least 30 pounds from this one. In the morning (I take the pills at night), I am absolutely ravenous, and even when I fight to keep to a schedule and write down everything I eat, I still end up failing.

Though I'm now going off the Seroquel and trying something else, my pdoc (also certified in internal medicine) brought up that I would be a good candidate for lap-band, which he's mentioned in the past. He says I'm mentally prepared for it, it often works well for those with serious weight problems tied to psych meds/issues, and the fact that I'm on CPAP and blood pressure pills are additional reasons. At this point, if it would work, I could get it through insurance, and figure out how to swing the time off at work, I would honestly go for it.

So now it's time for research, both medical and financial. I'll still keep working "the old fashioned way" while I try out the new pills, but I think my resistance is caving on this one. While I have no idea what my husband will think (he, too, is working on weight loss) I figure I should at least consider it.

The big thing I need to look into is insurance-related. I have BCBS of Arizona, and they pay 80%. I meet the other requirements, though I'm not sure how to document that I've been at a BMI of 35+ for 5 years (I've kinda skipped between doctors). I'm clueless about this one: "Individual must provide written documentation of participation in a weight loss program for 8 weeks or longer within 12 months preceding weight loss surgery. Weight loss programs include recognized commercial weight loss programs, nutritional counseling or hospital based weight loss programs." So I guess I need to give Weight Watchers or something a go before they'll approve it?

Anyway, there's me in a nutshell, I'm looking forward to researching and reading here. Thanks for reading :)

Hello I wanted to respond to you mostly to validate what you are saying. I have worked for over 20 years with juveniles with mental health issues. I have seen first hand the weight gain with the psych meds. I really commend you for staying on your meds to deal with your bi polar. I know this must be very difficult for a young lady such as yourself. I think if your doctor believes it will be ok then why not? I would just make sure your meds come in liquid form or can be dissolved. I know many of those meds are very large and time released. Great job on your journey to wellness.

your present doctor should have your records from the past years and be able to supply the insurance company what it needs. Your surgeons office will get that all together for you so start there first and see where it goes. good luck

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
