1 week banded with plication

Recommended Posts

I'm thirty years old. Its been one week since I've been banded and plicated it has been tough. I am looking forward to next week when I go to my first post op appointment. I am excited, scared, and nervous hoping that I did the right thing and the weight will come off considering my BMI was 59. I was 5'6 370 lbs on the day of surgery I was 356. Hope o come down more.

How are you feeling, aside from scared & nervous (which I totally get)? I wish I could find more history on this procedure, but there are only a few who have had it done.

My surgery date is 3/25, and I'm considering adding plication to the band. From what I understand, the plication increases weight loss, especially in the first few months; more like the sleeve or bypass. Also, it's supposed to reduce band complications; slipping and fills.

I wish you all the best with your recovery, and your journey. I will be VERY interested to hear your progress :D

Congratulations! You did the right thing, you took charge of your body.

Just remember to follow your doctor and dietitian's rules and you will be fine. Everyone on this site will agree because every doctor does things differently. If you have any real problems call the doctor, that is why they are there. Some people wait a few days, weeks, months and if they called when the problem/pain first happened it would have been easier or better for them. I have had no problems or pains.

I really enjoy my monthly support groups and I go every month and they are required by my doctor. You learn a real lot listening to others and the professionals.

Enjoy your new body.

I feel good thank you. I'm back to work no pain because I had laproscopic surgery my doctor did the plication for free because he is doing investigational study so that insurances will cover if it shows effectiveness so far it shows that the weight loss is increased. I did the plication for those reasons but also because they were going in anyway it only adds 15 minutes to surgery. Well if you want information I had mine done at North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital at Syossett its program is bigger and more advanced then the one at NYU Hospital and NY Hospital. The care is specialized and they have all these resources that are free. I will try to post regularly on my progress as well as answer and ask questions. Thank you for the well wishes I wish you the same :)

Melody - I look forward to hearing more from you :-) And I'm glad to hear that you're in the best of hands out there on the east coast. I'm located in So. Calif., and am also in the very best of hands. The doctor's name is Helmuth Billy, and if I had to guess, I'd say that many of the reputable doctors know of each other; even across the country.

Draven - I would LOVE to hear how you've been doing over the past months since your surgery. Any complications (my biggest fear considering plication+band). How was the weight loss over the first few months? How many (if any) fills so far? I guess I have a lot of questions :P

Hi mrsinto. I decided to do the plication because everything pointed at it being safe. I didn't have a quick drop off in weight. Which I preferred. In all fairness I had a stretch where stress took over and diet went on the back burner. During that time I gained back ten pounds. It was over about a five month period. There were times when I wondered if I even had it done because of the amount of food I could still eat.

This Christmas I decided I needed to get back with it and put the negative out of my life. Since than I've had two fills and have dropped a little over twenty pounds. Making my total 65 pounds. I started pre surgery and pre diet at 325. I'm now 260. My goal weight is 220. I'm very wide framed and wouldn't want to drop much lower than that.

Hi melody. I just went in last Friday for a fill. Jillian gave it to me. She's the best. Since then I've had to watch my bite size, really for the first time.

I'm 41. My wife got banded from him too. But no plication. They didn't offer it back when she went.

I can say that the surgery wiped me out. The day after my wife got banded she was walking up hills through the woods. Me? I felt like I got run over. By a truck. Followed by a marching band. Lol. Plus I suddenly started hating the taste of everything. That went away after about a week. Lol.

Draven - if you had it to do over, would you do the plication again, or lap band alone? I'm so interested in other people's experiences with this procedure, because I go back & forth between about adding it. Makes me a bit nervous, but I like the idea of added restriction. Although, it doesn't sound like you experienced that, until you had a fill. Glad to hear that you got back on track. Stress is a hard one when food is our "go to" drug :-)

How has your wife done with the band?

Good question. This was how I looked at it. First, it looks very safe. In fact, safer than banding itself. In fact I even asked about just getting plication without band because of nerves. Lol. Was told no. Lol. I didn't feel restricted. But I can honestly say that during my break from dieting I gained ten pounds back, not the full fifty I normally would have.

The other reason I did it was this, banding isn't a definite. There could be problems. And your band could come out. The way I saw it, if they did have to take the band out I'd still have the plication as a back up and this way I wouldn't have gone through this for nothing.

I am happy I did plication. It's completely reversible. I do wish it was more restrictive. But it does seem to be helping.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
