She's Come Undone

Recommended Posts

Has anybody read this book? It was an Oprah Book Club selection in '97 but I am just now reading it. It is written by the perspective of a fat woman. She is an emotional eater. Most of the reviews talk about how halarious the book is, but I find it depressing. I also found myself not liking the main character, the fat woman.

I myself am a volume eater and sometimes eat when board. I often read this board and others who complain about being emotional eaters or people who get banded and from day one made no attempt to change their ways and to be honest I get annoyed. This bbok gave me the same feelings. However, with Delores (the fat girl) it was her attitude period that drove me nuts.

Has anyone read this book? Could you relate or were you as shocked and appalled as I were. If you haven't read it, then you can by it used on Amazon for less than a dollar.

I read it in 1997 ha! My memory of the details are fuzzy, but I found it a powerful read. Yes, it mixed up some emitions in me. Might be worth another read.

The most amazing thing about this book is that it was written by a man. No offense to men; I love em! But I was shocked to see how exactly, precisely, and totally this author got inside the head of the main character. I was blown away actually. It's a fabulous fabulous book.

I read this book around 5 years ago i think, and i remember that it was also a very moving story. I remember there were some parts that shocked me, like the anal sex part. But the truth of the book is that this girl suffered some major drama, and just becoming skinny didn't fix all her problems. I liked the book.

I read it in '97 back then I was down to a size 10 and thought that I had conquered my weight problem for good. Boy was I stupid!! I remember thinking that the book was very depressing so I guessed that it hit a nerve. I would not want to read it again. Although it was well written it was too dark for me.

I also read this book several years ago. Wally Lamb is a wonderful author. It's too bad he's only written 2 novels. The other novel is entitled I Know This Much Is True, which is also a great read. Completely different subject, but very good nonetheless.

He did write a collection of stories from women in York Correctional Institution, but it's just not the same.

I read this book a long time ago and really didn't like it at all. Looking back, I am sure it struck a chord with me so I should probably read it again.

I remember though not really liking the main character that much.

I am amazed though that it was written by a man.

I also read the book a few years ago and that book almost made me come undone!!!!.........It depressed me but I couldn't put it down. Just when you thought it couldn't get any more depressing it did . It was an emotionally hard book to read but a book you can't put down because something in you just has to know what happened next.

Good Lord that book was depressing! I finished it a few days ago. I was like what are they tal;king about, this book being hilarious?! It was not funny at all. If they meant Delrois's disrespectful and rude behavior as funny, I disagree. I thought she had the worse personality of any character I have ever read. Once she lost weight she was a much more likable character.

Has anybody found thisd true of themself? When you were fat and miserable were you mean? Then once you lost weight you were more pleasant?

The part of the book that aggravated me the most was when she laid up in her dorm room all fat and nasty farting all over the place and left food around. So when her new roommate showed up, she left a horrible first impression.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
