Recommended Posts

I am having such a hard time with this pre-op diet, very very hard. Any tips from anyone? :(

There are so many different pre-op diets you'll have to tell us what it is?

Wait, your profile said you had surgery 2 days ago? Pre or post op?

Oh, Ha Ha, my surgery was rescheduled to the 23rd. I am on 3 to 5 Protein Shakes a day for 2 weeks. Sorry I haven't updated my profile :). -Kelly

First off, make sure you are getting enough Protein to stay feeling full. Are you allowed to have broth and sf Jello and sf popsicles? The first 3 to 4 days were awful for me and of course your body is detoxing from sugar and carbs or at least mine was. I won't lie, it was hard, probably one of the hardest things I've ever done but I kept looking at the big picture, and why I was doing it. Stay focused and I promise you, you can do this! Hang in there, big hugs!

I agree with Donna. The pre-op was the hardest part of the process for me too. I was a complete wreck, physically and mentally. Keep your eye on the prize and please try and remember this is only temporary. Drink as much Water as you can. SF Jello and broth do help, just for variety. Hang in there!

Thank you for your support and advice. The surgeons office didn't mention broth but they did say I could have sugar free drinks and Popsicles. I hate this, everything looks so yummy. I never realized how little will power I had. I didn't think it would be this hard. -Kelly

I had a rough time as well, and my family did not help. Keep mentally focused on the end game and how you don't want them to cancel surgery for any reason. I have 5 more days and it has switched to not being hungry at all and trying to remember that I need to keep my calorie count up. It is strange how we go from "starving" to "uninterested". I think the liquid diet is getting your mind and body ready for the banded life. Keep your eye on the prize, you can do this.

I eliminated sugar and carbs three days before I started my pre-op. I think that helped tremendously. I'm only one day into the pre-op, but no hunger so far.

My surgery is two months away and Im already "training" I bought some advantEDGE carb smart shakes. And drink everything sugar free. The thing that keeps me hopeful for my two week diet is that-in my case. Ill be allowed one 6oz piece of chicken breast every other day. No seasoning no oil og course.

its hard to do the pre op, i also was on liquids for 2 weeks prior..the only tip i can offer is to believe in yourself..right now being on the pre or post op seems like forever, but with each day that passes, its closer to being over...the thing that saved me was drinking alot and SF popsicles..

hang in there, you can do it, if you WANT to

I also had a two week liquids pre-op diet. The only thing that kept me going was knowing that I was shrinking my liver so that my doctor had an easier time banding me...I kept telling myself that I could do anything for ten days...one day at a time. Hang in there.

I focused on the "end game" - knowing this was for only a limited time and that it would make surgery easier, I could do it. I did think of my liver being more pliable and safer for the surgeon to work around.

using broth and the Jello were also a nice variety.

Good Luck! It will be worth it!

I took it day by day. I focused on getting through today and figured I would deal with tomorrow when it got here. You can go this. Get plenty of rest so you have the energy to get through this and know that it's not forever.

Thank you everyone :') you know what? It does get easier after the first few days. I found that hard to believe in the beginning but I'm noticing it now for myself. Day by day is what I'll do. I knew I would find good advice from everyone here. Thank you for being supportive. Hugs to everyone....

I know I was terrified of the 2 weeks of liquids before. I just had to stop and ask myself...if I can't handle only a couple weeks of liquids, how do I expect to make a lifetime worth of changes to help my band work for me?? That really did it for me. The liquid pre op diet has also helped me for my 2 weeks of liquids now post op. You can do it...you've got this!!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
