To Band or Not to Band.........That is the question!

Recommended Posts

I am feeling you on this! I just turned 50 and decided the last 10 years are not going to be like my next 10 years.

When I went to the seminar, they were "swaying" everyone to the sleeve. I don't want to get rid of a body part, I want to lose weight.

I found this forum and became 100% sure before I went for my 1st appointment.

She even tried to discourage me AGAIN! I told her " I am 50 years old I am the only one who makes decisions about what I do with my body! I don't rely on anyone else's filters." She gave me a blank stare as they have not given her training in how to overcome an unknown objection.

I told her of this forum and the real stories of successes, struggles and support. I told her I know what to eat, what not to eat, how to poop and what to do for my gas pains etc. Again, blank stare.

I am now seeking lap band surgery at another hospital as that left a bad taste in my mouth.

I am determined!

You've been asked before to cough up the stats, facts and studies to back up your wild accusations? Let's see the facts? No BS, no spin, just the facts m'am?

"Wild accusations"? No one is accusing anyone, except perhaps, you? You have your band, you're doing well, keep at it. But someone who is young, responsible for little children and has his whole life ahead of him should not be told to choose a device that is failing at ever increasing rates. I belong to two different failed bands groups on different sites that each have almost 700 members. One of the groups has 3-6 new members joining per day. When I ask someone to PM me for links, they aren't banded yet or are having complications. Those are the people I'm trying to help. If you're happy, I'm happy for you. Please don't accuse me of lying, as your post implied.

He's not accusing you of lying, however you keep throwing out these statistics without facts to back them. Saying you know people on websites saying they're having complications doesn't mean there's a high failure rate of the band, it means there's a lot of people who are abusing their band or simply not doing what they should be to work with their band. If someone's band is having issues because they're chronically over-eating, eating around the band, drinking carbonation, or walking around with it too tight then the band didn't fail the patient failed.

Oh and links to half wit so-called "studies" don't count either. An actual study is going to take patient caused versus band caused failure into account, not just a flat percentage based on bands removed.

If you have an actual study that differentiates between patient caused failures and band caused failures, please by all means, post it here.

Even if the person isn't lying... It's 700 people at most her two sites have 1400 people that's 1400 out of how many??? Probably a million .. The band works if u work w it don't think with any of these that u can continue to eat what u have! We got these surgeries because have trouble keeping weight off at risk or have diabetes high blood pressure etc. if your on this site to just bash the band get off! We're are all here for support sorry ur band didn't work for or with u but we are here as a group with bands that WORK because we work with the band....

Unfortunately there is no way to differentiate between complications caused by noncompliance vs those caused directly by the band and no study to date on this subject.

Basically it sounds like anything I say will be dismissed as irrelevant or incorrect, so why should I bother?

If failures are caused by "If someone's band is having issues because they're chronically over-eating, eating around the band, drinking carbonation, or walking around with it too tight then the band didn't fail the patient failed." then there needs to be a different tool for these people...the band is the WRONG choice for those who will not or cannot comply.

That said, I complied, didn't slip my band, it tightened up on its own over 15 months until almost no barium would drip thru and has caused me miserable GI problems. The OP asked the question, I answered it based on my experience.

I don't disagree with you at all, actually. There are WAY too many people getting the band that simply shouldn't have it. They go into this completely blind and ignorant to the facts. I often wonder, are there this many doctors just shoving patients through with little or no information or are there this many people foolishly ignoring their doctor's instructions? But even so, it needs to be specified that this is why people are failing, not that the band is failing.

I know some people have issues by no fault of their own. It's horrible but it happens and it's the risk we take going into surgery. Heck there's no guarantee I won't be one someday, who knows? I just know that there has to be some distinction between patient caused failures versus band caused failures to give a truly objective and honest portrayal of the band. Just saying "I've read the stories of 700 people having problems" without mentioning that 75% have no one to blame but themselves is extremely misleading.

Ok...but where are you getting your "75% have no one to blame but themselves " statement? Isn't that the same thing? I'm speaking for myself and giving examples from my experience and others I know. The only person who knows if a person has been compliant, is that person...we don't have access to their thoughts, actions, etc. Even if there was such a study, how would you be able to determine compliance without locking them all up, standardizing their food, delivering it cut up and monitor their chewing, speed of eating etc. Pretty ridiculous proposition. If someone says they've been compliant, you have to believe them; give them the benefit of the doubt. I know plenty of peeps with band problems who beat themselves up over eating the wrong thing, or eating too fast, thinking they caused the problem. Hasn't everyone forgotten what they were doing from time to time and made a mistake. I've had the stomach flu three times since being banded and my band stayed put. A little less judgement and an open mind go a long way towards an informative and possibly helpful adult conversation.

I don't have an issue with you or your posts, but I do with those who take it upon themselves to "patrol" the complication forum and try to bully those of us who are utilizing that forum to share for the benefit of others.

No one is trying to bully anyone, in fact I have been nothing but respectful and decent to you. I simply don't want people scared off by unfounded horror stories anymore than I want people getting banded who truly have no business getting one. People need to see the good and the bad, but not presented in such a way to make the band look horrible or like a magic bullet. Neither extreme is good or honest.

Again, facts(proof?) please? Anecdotal assertions are not facts fyi.

ok, here comes my pov from nc

any WLS has pros and cons

some have issues and some dont

the more that have complications are the ones more vocal against and suggest other surgeries..as are the ones who are not compliant

(please note that no matter what WLS one gets, things do happen, good and bad) so one is no better than the other. i feel one must do what works for them and be compliant as you can be,, if something awful happens, that is terrible but success will vary with any WLS...based on many things..

Exactly!

I knew that each surgery had bad potential outcome but

1) I felt I COULD NOT LOSE THE WEIGHT ANY OTHER WAY. I honestly felt SO hopeless knowing I had 100+ lbs to lose

2) i felt that the lapband as opposed to the other surgeries was less scary/invasive

But yes, every surgery can go horribly wrong and have complications. It's just about making sure the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks before making the decision to proceed with WLS

I see this a very talked about topic. Lapbandster I couldn't have said it better myself as I'm in the same boat. I feel I need to lose at least 100lbs and quite frankly can't do it alone. I too fear then cutting away of body parts etc that's why I'm choosing the band.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
