Scared of surgery

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any advice? I'm afraid I won't go through with it bc of how scared I am of surgery! What if I die during surgery, what if there are complications, etc. I'm so scared but at the same time I want this so bad! Any advice?

is your dr operating out of his garage or in the back yard? if not, i am sure everything will go just fine.

normal to be scared but i could get run over by a herd of zebras too or a tree could fall on me..cant worry about what if's....just focus on what is going to happen..better health, lose weight...all good stuff.

just follow your dr's guidelines and do your best to make yourself well and healthy...you can do it.

Karanicole - I feel the same way. I have thought about it much and have been doing a lot of praying trying to quell my nerves. Just know that your medical team is going to take care of you. My surgery is next week, when is yours?

Oh girl, I could have so wrote this exact post this time last year. I was FREAKED OUT about having the surgery. But guess what? It went fine....really. I personally had never been under before and even though I have had 5 kids(3 of them naturally), I was so scared. I get it.

But here is what I kept coming back to....if I don't get the surgery, I am going to end up with a heart attack, a stroke, or worse!! Then it will be surgery and not my choice. I prayed about and really thought about it for a long time before committing to the surgery. But it's the best thing I have done. I have lost over 70 pounds, TONS of inches, went from size 22/24 to a loose 14 in pants and Large in shirts. I have more energy, feel so much better and getting compliments again is nice. I'm not done yet but I am enjoying this weight loss journey.

You have to trust in your Dr, the hosptial, the whole process. You have to find peace with it and expect it to go well. Once I made the decison and had everything in place, I was ok with it. But it's up to you to get to that place.....best of luck to you :)

You will be fine. Have you checked out the surgeons stats? That made me feel better after I looked at many different doctors.

I have had a few other surgeries and it is scary but this too shall pass.

You have to decide which is greater, your need for a new life or your fear of what if.

You would not hesitate if you had to have open heart surgery, or something like that, an that may be what you are facing in the future if you don't make yourself as healthy as possible today.

You will do great, hang in there and pray. God will give you the answer you need if you just listen for him.

Much luck and love to you :D

Thank you all soooo much for the encouraging words. I suffer from anxiety to its not helping at all. I'm in the same boat as you, valann, I've never had surgery besides my wisdom teeth so I guess I'm scared of the unexpected. I know its the best thing for me. It also doesn't help that my family isn't supportive. All I have is my husband and everyone on this forum. Thank you all so much again. This is what I needed to hear.

I was nervous the day of surgery but I wanted this so bad. This by far was the easiest surgery I ever went through and that includes the recovery. I wanted it so bad that fear was not enough to hold me back. This was the only "elective" surgery I ever had so seeing the choice was mine my fear was containable. I have had about 7 surgeries in my life.

You'll do great. Just keep looking forward to where you might be a year from now!!

Yes, I've looked up this surgeon and done my research. He is one of the best in the St. Louis area. I know I'll be in good hands. Just really, really scared. But I would regret it every day of my life if I backed out just bc of nerves.

Babe- I have an anxiety disorder and take Paxel for it. Surgery was freaking me out, but I knew I had one of the best surgeons around (Duke Hospital). I finally to try and put the fear to the back of my mind. The morning of the surgery I was postively shaking. My BP was up because I was so nervous, I joked with all the doctors and nurses and took the edge off.

You will be fine, just take a deep breath and try not to think about it to much.

Best wishes for your upcoming surgery. It is nerve wracking,. My own husband really needs surgery. He has had 3 drs advice him to have wls. But he is scared too. I can't convince him otherwise, but love him just as he is. His health is what causes me to worry!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
